I haven't seen fog for well over ten years! In the late sixties I lived on the Monterey Peninsula in California, and could watch the fog roll in every evening without fail.

I see quite a lot of fog here during the winter months. Not sure if it's fog though or low laying clouds, since I live on a hill. ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

well i suppose the fog here are in fact clouds usually. but what exactly is the definition of fog, making it rare? i thought it is normal to have fog every now and then...

When I first moved to Paris, there would be fog from time to time. But the urban area has heated up so much that it now acts as though we are living in a glass dome. There is still plenty of fog in marshy Picardy.

I remember when plastic was brittle and didn't last long, before it became the invulnerable stuff that lasts a thousand years at the dump.

I remember when fly spray was called 'Flit' and you filled up a container that you pressurized yourself. There were no aerosol cans.
I remember when we used to go camping and put a ring of DDT around the tent to keep out the insects.

I remember some cars you still had to hand crank to start and a heater was an optional extra. With indicators that semaphored out of the side.

i vaguely remember some power cuts in my childhood, that were a big adventure, as you had to sit in candle light.
of course, these days daily power cuts have become normal again... so i feel like transported back to my childhood...

Kerouac, how technical do you want me to get?
Simple version - it cut off a proportion of the air supply to allow for a richer mixture of petrol to account for the losses in petrol reaching the cylinders due to it condensing on the cold inlet manifold.

I remember when plastic was brittle and didn't last long, before it became the invulnerable stuff that lasts a thousand years at the dump. I used to live on a boat and another marina dweller once quipped, "Anyone who thinks plastic isn't biodegradable should try using it in a marine environment." A couple of years ago I could have been badly hurt when the hitherto sturdy little plastic stepstool suddenly exploded underneath me. I remember when fly spray was called 'Flit' and you filled up a container that you pressurized yourself. There were no aerosol cans.
I remember when we used to go camping and put a ring of DDT around the tent to keep out the insects. I remember the Flit sprayers. There must be thousands of people in the world who watch The Godfather and don't know what Marlon Brando and his grandson are playing with. I remember when trucks went through the neighborhoods at night emitting a fog of DDT to control mosquitoes. Kids used to ride their bikes behind them, trying to stay in the mist. (& they wonder why my generation were such druggies!) I remember not having a fridge.
I lived here without a fridge for a while, as I'd changed houses and was waiting to get a frost-free. Having a fridge is better than not having a fridge.

I remember when milk was delivered by horse and cart..........

After wondering if I'd said about a horse and cart milk delivery I went back a few pages. I discovered I'd already mentioned it, plus I'd mentioned about not having a fridge. I was then going to say something about it in a cynical way about you having to pay attention more - then I was hoisted by my own petard when I discovered Baz had already mentioned previous to my post about having hand cranked car starting.

Simple version - it cut off a proportion of the air supply to allow for a richer mixture of petrol to account for the losses in petrol reaching the cylinders due to it condensing on the cold inlet manifold. That's quite sufficient - thanks. I knew how to pull on the handle or push the button.

When I first moved to Paris in the last century, there were still knife sharpeners and window pane replacers pushing their carts through the streets and ringing a bell.

Anyone else remember records with a "B side"?
Or record players with stack loading spindles? They dropped another platter down on top of the previous one and played a whole group of records.
Two-LP sets had side 1 & 4 back to back and 2&3, so you could load em up, play 1 & 2, flip the pile and re-stack it, and play 3 & 4 all in order.
