I remember when train toilets flushed directly on to the tracks.

So do I Kerouac! And as a young girl of 7 or 8yrs old I distinctly remember seeing the dirty blackened stones that lay between the rails and being quite afraid. We were also told not to use the toilets whilst the train was in the station..... were they re joking? You know when a child has to go they have to GO!

The only dildo I ever saw in my life was on the train tracks. Something to wonder about forever.

Yes -- I thought of him yesterday too when I read about the elections in Cambodia.

I remember when some people actually bought fake mobile phones to try to look important, when they couldn't afford the real thing.

Ha Ha! Not only that.....they enacted fake conversations when a real cellphone could not get signal! ;D

I recently saw a movie during which there was a scene where the TV played the National Anthem at the end of the broadcasting day. I had totally forgotten about this until I saw this particular scene.

I can still find test patterns on my TV screen if I hunt around the stations in Morocco or Tunisia around 5 a.m. Believe me, I don't do that often.

How well I remember the "Last Orders Hurdles" at the end of an evening's cinema in the UK, with one lot of people desperate to get to the pub before they closed (often 10.30pm in those days), trying to get past some stout patriot at the end of the row standing to attention while they played the National Anthem, and a clip of the Queen looking very dashing, sitting sidesaddle in her Trooping the Colour outfit, rippled over the closing curtains.

I had to stand up along with everybody in the cinema in Bangkok when they played the national anthem before showing Titanic.

Now that you remind me of it, they used to play God Save the Queen after the last movie showing in Toronto. No picture of her though. Some people stood and glared at those who didn't. I don't remember if or when it was replaced by O Canada or simply stopped.
I just looked on the net but couldn't find the information.

When I was little, one of the movie theatres near our town played a little film of the Star Spangled Banner before the movie. But at that time, the name of the place was the American Legion Theatre, and I suppose that they owned it. I think it was spliced right on to this sort of film.
When it became The Sand a number of years later, the forced patriotism was dropped.

I can remember the Star Spangled Banner being played before the feature in US Air Force base theaters & everyone standing for it, but don't remember it in civilian movie houses.

Does any North American remember "Magic Fingers" in motel rooms? It would vibrate the bed for 10 minutes for 25 cents. We kids would love it and demand it while the adults would look embarrassed.

No, we didn't have THAT kind of motels in Florida.

No, I'm joking. I can remember my parents keeping a whole roll of coins available to keep my hyperactive brother entertained. I don't remember any embarrassed smirks, but then I would not have picked up on those signals.

I clearly remember the Y2K scare as well Kerouac as I was charged to install a diskette into every hard drive in our facility and perform a self test and then place a yellow sticker on every unit that passed and a red one that did not. When I returned to the office after the 1st, every hard drive, yellow sticker or not, worked.

How about mag cards? They were quickly outdated but I used to store form letters on them where I could leave spots blank to fill information in by hand. Also made one that operated as our company letterhead, my boss was so pleased that he did not have to order from the printer any longer!

Nope, I guess I must be much younger than you! ;D
Actually, I worked for such a conservative company that we were about the last people in the industry to even get computers, so we missed most of the early versions.
