The upside of it for MJ fans is that we're getting to hear a lot of his music on the radio these days....

In the meantime the taxpayers in California are having to foot the bill for security etc.for the memorial to the lovely tune of 2 million USD.

They are showing the thing today on about 10 television channels in France -- 2 of the main networks and 8 cable channels (and I am NOT including stations like CNN, BBC World, Al- Jazeera or other news channels in that count). Brother!

I think I already have tears in my eyes... from laughing. The 'black carpet' photo shoot of the stars in their glittery funeral best was so over the top and inappropriate that I am expecting Michael Jackson to appear with his outfit and makeup from Thriller and start dancing with them.

Oh, it should be on YouTube in 15 minutes and in all of the magazines in 3 days. I'll go and check YouTube right now.

Here's a first pathetic report about the black carpet:
Celebrities walk black carpet to Staples Center
9:48 AM | July 7, 2009
Celebrities are strolling down a black carpet into Staples Center for the Michael Jackson memorial service.
Movie director Spike Lee stopped to pose beside a Michael Jackson poster. Actor Wesley Snipes, who appeared in Lee's "Jungle Fever," Omarosa of "The Apprentice" and "Everybody Hates Chris" star Terry Crews were among the early arrivals.
The entire Kardashian clan has entered the venue, as has Lou Ferrigno, the former "The Incredible Hulk" star and Jackson's personal trainer who in recent days has recounted to countless reporters his work with Jackson.
Stars of yesteryear TV were also on hand--Jaleel White of Steve Urkel fame and Elizabeth Berkley of "Saved by the Bell" were among the guests.
Other celebrities included Barbara Walters in a black pantsuit and ropes of pearl necklaces. Tyler Perry was there in a cornflower blue tie, black suit, white shirt and sunglasses. And no wig.
LeVar Burton arrived in a midnight blue suit and tie. And no sunglasses.

They were actually broadcasting the funeral service live on the BBC website yesterday. I watched about 2 minutes of it -- I had no idea who the guitar player I saw was. But it was a golden coffin. -- how tacky. But I supposed it had been planned in advance. I mean, who would have a golden coffin in stock?

*shamefacedly begins picking rhinestones off of own coffin* I'll bet you it's possible to pick up one off the rack in L.A., plus they had a few days notice.

Missed the coffin somehow, wasn't paying attention. I did glance at the service right when some guitar player I never saw before either bjd. I kept thinking they were going to flash his name but never did find out. Mr. C. said he heard there was mention of a coffin tour.

No one knows where the coffin has gone. I still think that poor MJ might have gone to be plastinated and if so, he probably wasn't in the coffin at all. Stranger things have happened!

Perhaps they can enshrine the coffin at Neverland, where a never-ending stream of admissions-paying fans could raise money to repay the city Los Angeles for the $4 million in extra police and overtime pay made necessary by MJ's inconvenient death and funeral.

Two things I am sick of hearing/seeing with regards to him. The attention-whoring president of Chile's Michael Jackson fan club crying over her tickets that she had bought to see him in London and whining about all the money she had spent on the tickets/flights. The stupid comment that Chile is the country that has most mourned Michael Jackson . I mean first of all, how would you even measure that secondly, I doubt that is even true, and thirdly, who cares - is it some sort of competition?!? I guess the newscasters need to look for a local angle on everything.

I saw somewhere today how much it cost for the police protection for the MJ nonsense -- several millions in police salaries. It said that they were going to ask people (fans, I suppose) to contribute to pay for it. Why not take it out of the enormous royalties the owner of the rights is getting for the huge sales this week?

bjd, I think I heard something about royalties going to a kind of secure trust away from tax collectors' hands ... If I understand well something that most stars these days try to set up as early in their career as possible.

Maybe they will start a new religion soon and get tax free status. This as a symbol would certainly be no worse than another major religion that uses a man nailed to some boards.

I find that last comment crass and unwarranted. I find the symbol of the virgin Mary quite lovely and comforting, even though she isn't supposed to be god. However, I don't understand how an entire religion can have chosen to show a person being murdered in extreme suffering to represent their faith, as it seems to me that the principal precept of Christianity is things like "love your fellow man." It just makes me think that the believers don't really think things through if they have found this image suitable for 2000 years. However, I do understand that this is not the place to have this discussion.
