Maybe the US is been there/done that with the whole situation of promoting more cultivation, more use of artificial fertilizer, etc. until whoops ~~ there goes the topsoil!

Yes, quite the can of worms, isn't it? And its popularity makes it too precious for the farmers to be able to eat the nutritious grain.

well i just tried to find something about it in german or english, as my french isn't that good, but couldn't so far...
as for the popularity making it too precious for the farmers to eat - yeah, but they weren't eating it before either (they weren't even growing it), afaik... and as i said, in peru it starts to be eaten more often, though not so much by farmers yet, but definitely not only by the rich...

We were in the forefront of this subject, because LPTT has just recently entered a discussion on quinoa.
The only thing I really learned is that they are now starting to grow it elsewhere and perhaps starving fewer Peruvian peasants.

Okay, I have a bag of quinoa and might make a little of it to go with tonight's grilled salmon.

It was quite good cooked in water and butter, but I still feel a bit guilty about starving Peruvian peasants by eating such a thing when they can't afford a product to replace food that we have snatched out of their mouths with our money.

The good news is that other countries are beginning to grow quinoa.

What's really awful is that it is almost always in the "organic" section of markets, so people think they are doing a favour to the growers for buying it.

but organic doesn't mean that necessarily - fair trade is supposed to mean that. the one i buy does say it is fair trade, so i hope that is true ... btw though in the village in peru i was told people didn't use to eat quinoa at all, as it had been almost forgotten - and only started becoming popular again recently ...
