My runner beans need to go into their huge pot, as do the peas and edamame beans. I'm trying to get my sweetcorn a lot bigger before I plant them into the flower bed in amongst the herbaceous perennials....

I am growing tiny greens in a little pot. The seeds were sent to me from a kind person on the other side of the English Channel. They have sprouted brilliantly after just three days. Now I have to see if they survive.

My carrots are starting to germinate also have spring onions, radishes and rocket in large terracotta bowls. This morning I pricked out the lemon grass too.

Gosh, Cheery -- how much space do you have?!

We have a small garden tbh...the back garden is slightly bigger than the front. Cant grow much in the front garden tho because every time I dig a hole it fills up with water..a consequence of clay soil and the fact that almost all the neighbours have covered their front gardens with tarmac for parking.
The back garden soil has had tons of organic matter dug in over the years so growing plants is easier there. All my veggies will be growing in containers. I'm planning to have a few flowers in large pots too.

I get that much and more every other day now. Been growing them wrong all these years!

Do tell! What is the right way? I'd like to grow them in pots, but generally the tiny yield is not worth giving them space.

Ok. Here are my pots. There are 5 of them with 4 plants to a pot. Once they finish fruiting cut off all leaves and runners. They will grow a new set to see them through winter. In early spring cut off that set. They will then produce new leaves again and lots of flowers. Repot every 3 years and feed in summer with a high potash feed every 10 days and keep well watered. Try to keep fairly dry in winter.

Thanks, Mick! I see the pots don't even need to be that big, a real plus.

Pots are 15”x15” and 9” deep but it is the cutting off of the leaves that is the key.

Ah, the carrots are grown in window box type containers so they hit the bottom and turn. My veg bed too stony for carrots.

Today we dug a few potatoes out of one of the pots. I grow carrots in quite a deep pot, they need thinning so I'll remove some to use in a stir fry for tonight's meal...they're still tiny. I've also cut some rocket, but didnt take a pic. The corn is still disappointingly small The tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, peppers and courgettes aren't ready yet.

Quite a crop, Cheery! It seems too early for you to be getting corn or any of the new world vegetables.

Someone in the suburbs of Paris said they had potatoes coming out of their ears this year. Each shovel in the garden brings up enough potatoes for three meals.

Wow! My first picking of potatoes in pots was disappointing. Maybe too early.
Came across seed of giant winter spinach that I can sow now. They can go in the space where the broad beans are as they will be coming out this week.
Love spinach.

They're earlies right? The foliage on mine went a bit manky but I carried on earthing them up in their pots and watering...hope the rest of your crop is ok.

My son-in-law seems to have made a vegetable garden out of much of his back yard. He planted potatoes and last week told me that he already had 28 kilos of potatoes. Not in pots though.

Sounds like your son in law has had an excellent crop bid. I grow in containers because of the size of our garden really. When we win gazillions of pounds on the lottery I will have GROUNDS! Including a nice walled kitchen garden for produce Better buy a ticket then....

So here’s a general report. Tomatoes coming on nicely, onions the best I have ever grown. Had a big crop of broad beans as there seemed to be more pollinators this year. Spinach got too dry and went to seed but I have resown. Lettuce has done well. First sowing of beetroot was poor but second sowing much better. Carrots doing well. Growing sweetcorn for the first time for years and coming on nicely. French bean seeds tucked in wherever there is a bit of space like between the tomatoes and sweet corn.
Courgettes a total failure. Sown twice but no show.
Strawberries now finished and cut back but a good crop.
All in all pretty pleased this year.

Fabulous Mick...it's so satisfying growing food for your family...
My crops this year.
Mini Cucumbers : in pots in the greenhouse. Took a while to get started but now I'm getting at least one every day from my 2 plants.
Potatoes: in 4 pots 2 seed potatoes in each. 3 pots of Charlotte and 1 of Rocket. All harvested now. Good crop.
Salad leaves : in shallow pots on the GH staging. Rocket went to seed early in the hot weather , little gem lettuces all eaten now. Should have grown more.
Sugar snap peas : big pot with canes for the plant to grow up. as with the salad, should have sown more. Good crop.
Kidney beans : doing really well in their pot...my big sister used to call them 'squeaky beans' grew 3 different types in one pot...lovely raw and in stir fries.
Radishes: complete failure. The pots weren't deep enough.
Salad onions: struggling in their pot.
Sweetcorn : think I put too many in one pot (6) but they're really growing well atm
Carrots : used a very large, deep pot...weve already had some small, sweet ones. They need a few more weeks really.
Tomatoes: not grown them outside before, got 3 plants in a grobag in the garden. The beef tomatoes are setting fruit but its early days.
Blueberries: these aren't in pots but we have 3 plants in their own little bed...this year we have a fabulous crop. We allegedly have successional fruiting... July, August and September...but they tend to overlap. One will be making lots of jam!
