Mark, once the tomato has turned red it is ready to enjoy. Some vine ripe tomatoes at the supermarket give you three of so red ones followed by three or so green ones o the same stem/vine. Just leaving the green ones on the vine will let them turn red in a few days. Out of the fridge always!

There's only about ten on this plant so that will do me for a few days as they are not big anyway.

That’s it. Pick ‘em and eat ‘em. Indeed. A red tomato isn't going to get any bigger or better. Looks delish.

Nice! Do you think they're less strong because they're so fresh?

I thought a courgette when grown large was a squash?

Oh of course! I can actually recall a recipe in one of my cookbooks that has the method to stuff a marrow. And another for stuffing baby gem squash. My gems for tonites dinner are too mature and I want to be able to eat the whole thing skin and all. Funny how memories come flooding back when I think about gem squash. It has not got any great flavour, so as kids we would push it to the side of our plates. My father noticed this and "repaired" the gems by adding butter and sugar. We loved it but I don't do them that way now. Instead I have boiled/steamed them and drizzled blue cheese and sage over them before popping into the oven for a few minutes.

I’ve asked a couple of times without luck but let’s try again.
A little while back whatagain mentioned growing courgettes almost a metre long. I’d love to know what variety they are and see a picture. Come on whatagain!

Mick, they must have read your IP & served you up UK prices. The prices are showing in USD for me.
I'm sure that's not the first time you've seen pictures of cucuzza, as I know you devoured every inch of all my Sicily reports.
I ate cucuzza my whole life in the US & have grown it as well. It is the loveliest, mildest squash. One of the main ways it's prepared in my family is simply cut up & stewed down with some tomatoes. This creates a thin delicate broth, not a tomato sauce. The special touch is to put in the tag ends of Romano cheese while it's cooking.

This year I bought and planted two tomato plants for big tomatoes. Neither seem to be what was on the label. One plant gave a lot of tomatoes and we managed to get some before the blackbirds did. They don't have much taste and I use them more in cooking. The second plant was supposed to be Crimean Black. They are still completely green. I have grown some before and they do become black and a bit cracked on top. These are just sitting there, hard and green. I am wondering whether they were mislabelled. Now that the weather is cooler, I'm debating just picking them and trying to ripen them inside. Or maybe they are supposed to be eaten green.
Meanwhile, my self-sown cherry tomatoes have given a ton of tomatoes, even though I didn't stake them or do anything special. I am going to give up on vegetable gardening.

It’s been an awful year for tomatoes and it’s only the cherry toms that have produced at all.
Nevertheless, over the past 10 days mine have put on some bulk but I don’t see them ripening.
I’m away next week and when I’m back I’ll pick all the sizeable ones and put them in a drawer with a couple of bananas to see if I can ripen them.

I've just grown 'Shirley' tomatoes this year and only one plant. Jeff's had about 8 so far, they were late. I think he should get a few more before I lose patience and rip everything out in the greenhouse.
