I sure do wish we could grow French tarragon here. I have tried so many times but nada. That and lemon verbena. Casimira, I successfully grew potted French tarragon in coastal southern North Carolina. Admittedly, it may have been a fluke, but I suspect you'll have success with it one day. And it seems to me that I had success with lemon verbena in Louisiana. I have one in a pot now and what I've learned about it is that finding the right spot for it is a matter of dumb luck. The one I have has been situated here and there in the patio & is now on year three in the same pot. It's stuck in a corner where it gets lots of sun, but is protected from wind & the pot itself is shaded. If you never manage to get it going, take consolation in the fact that it is the most ungainly of plants -- not attractive at all. On the same subject of "why won't this work for me", I have yet to get a good stand of Tagetes lucida, even though it's a Mexican native. As you know, it's a rampant grower in Louisiana.

When it's time to start planting the "new" garden I will give it another go. Thanks for the tip and words of encouragement.
I am surprised that you can't acquire the Tagetes lucida. It's a lovely plant but I do take issue with it being called Mexican tarragon as it has absolutely no features of French tarragon. I grow it for ornamental reasons and its bright yellow flowers but have never used it in cooking. I wouldn't know how to incorporate it in any of the dishes I cook.

Tarragon is an excellent idea.

Make sure it’s French though not Russian.

Chives, mint and sage are also perennial herbs.

I bought a tiny little basil plant in an organic pot yesterday (only 1.99€). I placed it in my planter and have high hopes for its development once its pot has dissolved.

I believe it's being grown on his windowsill in his kitchen.

Yes, all I have is a window box and two small pots beside it.

Last year's mint plant seemed to have survived and I was expecting great things, but then I forgot to water the old stems, and it definitely died. So now I have bought a new mint plant for next to nothing and potted it today.

I bought a new mint plant. The new one looks like it will thrive. My new crop of dill has just emerged. I have to make sure I keep it watered until the tiny spouts strengthen. Some of my tiny parsley plants survived in suspended animation all through the winter and should finally start developing, but I added some more parsley seeds in that zone. My new little basil plant isn't doing anything yet, but at least it is not withering away.

My basil has succumbed to the cold wave. That happens to me every time but I never learn.

See above. Casimira says it’s grown on your window sill in your kitchen and you said yes! Basil doesn’t stand a chance outside until the end of May at the earliest.

I ejected the basil plant because it was clearly 105% dead. The parsley, mint and basil are doing just fine, and the little rosemary plant looks like it would survive a nuclear holocaust.

Yes, and ... ? One of the things the cutter ants got the other night was every single leaf on a Pelargonium I had in the front bed. It hadn't been doing well where it was, so I took it out and replaced it with a Monarda which seemed instantly grateful for that spot.

My dill is doing great, my new basil is brilliant. The parsley is very slow for some reason, and the mint is having an identity crisis. I cut off some of the uglier pieces of the mint, and I hope that it will get the message.
