I think that all of us have seen things in our lives that we never thought we'd see, both good and bad.
We can mention them here.
I will list 3 for a start, just because they have all been mentioned or shown on my TV in the last 30 minutes:
-- condom commercials during programs aimed at teenagers
-- gay marriage
-- video screens as small as the wristwatch TV that Dick Tracy had in the comic strips and which seemed so silly at the time

Making it alive to the 21st Century seemed improbable to me at one time.
Carrying a telephone around with me, of course, still does.

As a teenager, I thought that it would not ever be possible to have a lovely holiday in Hanoi, or that such a thing could even be possible for anyone else.

I was born in South Africa. Having a black government is of course impossible.

Amazing, it really is. I have a thing about teeth, I'm almost obsessive about taking care of them properly..

I'd say for me the biggies were the Berlin wall coming down, the fall of the Soviet Union, and the election of a black president of the US.

I also have a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene hanging on my bathroom wall. Yeah, that and $4.00 will get me a cup of non-fat latte at Starbucks. Oops, sorry, k2, off topic. Hmm. Something I never thought I would see? ME IN PARIS!!! YIKES!!!

For me the fall of the wall. I couldn't believe it right up to the end, until I saw all those people pouring into West Berlin. Even though the embassies in Prague and Budapest had been occupied, even though the Austrians opened their border. I think that's been the biggest event in my life, apart from some personal things. Obama as president wasn't such a big surprise for me. I just knew that after he beat Clinton. I have quite a bit of confidence in American voters it seems

That I would be interacting, conversing, laughing, sharing views on everyday life with people on the other side of the world. It still boggles my mind. Viewing pictures of the same moon shining down on us at the same time. Knowing that sitting here ,writing words that seconds from now, someone in another country will be reading .

I'm with Casimira @ #15.
That, and that Doña Cuevas and I would realize our dream of retiring and living comfortably in Mexico. We will celebrate our 4th year here in September. Imagine! We haven't gone to work in 4 years!!

I keep getting conflicting ideas on this one. Sorry, I just now saw this, deyana. It's a good idea to buy a new soft (always) toothbrush whenever the bristles of the one you're using start to bend and curl. It stops being as effective then. And a soft brush is best because the bristles will adapt themselves around all those curves of your teeth, removing more of the plaque (film of bacteria) than a stiffer brush would. Something I never thought I would see? The utterly idiotic trend of young boys walking around with their huge pants falling off their asses. And the fact that the trend has been around as long as it has.

This certainly comes in the category of things I never thought I'd see. When I found this video my mouth dropped open. This is my hometown. There was a small library there when I was in my early teens that was closed because Black people might want to take out books. It's amazing to see this gathering and this conversation, especially considering the age of many of the participants.

What a great video, bixa. It's powerful because it's just regular people speaking honestly. Books can be so good as a method to get people to talk about things. It's one of the reasons I love the book club I'm in.

I never thought that Germany and France would use the same currency (not to mention the other countries -- Portugal using the same currency as Finland stretches the imagination as well).

I never thought that any more than a few sheepshagging nutters would vote for The Scottish Nationalist Party, but they won more votes than any other party in the last "election" for the Scottish "Parliament".

Isn't Sean Connery a supporter of that party? (Not that that makes it a valid political option.)

oh, bix! that video is really interesting!
Iain, it seems to me that the more open/small the world gets the more one encounters people who are afraid of that development.
