Alcohol is largely to blame for an "alarming" rise in the rate of oral cancers among men and women in their forties, say experts. Numbers of cancers of the lip, mouth, tongue and throat in this age group have risen by 26% in the past decade. 26% is high. Would it make you cut down on your alcohol consumption? More about it on here: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8193639.stm

Not saying it ain't true, but it seems like a bit of a sensational headline. The article does admit that, by far, the primary cause of this is smoking and also that it's the "smoking and strong spirits" that's the real culprit. As I always say - everything in moderation, including moderation.

The ancient Greeks spoke of the need for moderation in all things thousands of years ago. Some alcohol consumption is actually good for the health. A couple of well-known journalists and "men about town" here died of throat cancer and they were very much in the heavy smoking and lots of strong spirits model.
A doctor friend of mine, who would certainly warn against excess consumption of most stuff, also warned us about excess consumption of health snippet stories, usually sorely out of context. There is a "binge culture" in Britain that has woeful health consequences in many ways, but it doesn't mean that all people who enjoy a beer or a glass of wine are into binges or damaging consumption.

True, excess of anything is not a good idea, not even an excess of taking posts out of context.

Maybe using a straw cuts down the risk.

That's very nice, imec. But since I don't drink (alcohol), maybe this would be a better choice for me:

It has no alcohol so you don't need a straw for Coke - at least, not that kind ;D

I don't touch either kind of coke.
I worked with a guy who was seriously addicted to the sniffy kind and to alcohol, and who completely went off the rails and was stalking his ex-wife. He was one of these people who could work when high - guess it was the "upper and downer" combination, but he became stark raving mad. Ex-wife's brother - a sweetheart of a guy and about the least macho fellow of that generation I've ever met - eventually had to do the patriarchal big brother thing and threaten to either kill the abuser or get him sacked (abuser, brother and I all worked in the same general milieu) to get him to lay off the ex.
Now I want some bubbly rosé - doesn't have to be champagne - any good quality mousseux would do.

As I always say - everything in moderation, including moderation. I agree. But I am not a moderate person and have spent my life in pursuit of the 'Holy Grail' of moderation. I highly doubt the direct link between heavy alcohol consumption and the alarming rise in oral cancers. Most heavy drinkers that I know are heavy smokers, and I think that is the connection.

I actually read an article a while back that said HPV (in other words, oral sex) was something like 80% more likely to give you throat cancer than smoking! Maybe that's the real culprit!

Lagatta, don't start me on health "advice" provided by way of newspapers' headline. I am all for moderation ... in moderation!
