Okay, I saw this movie this morning, and I thought it was pretty good. I am not a major Quentin Tarantino fan, although every movie that he has made has had some interesting elements in it. (I confess that I did not go to see Kill Bill II because I hated Kill Bill I so much.)
Among the things I really liked was the use of different languages depending on what was happening -- I truly despise movies that have characters speak English (99% of the time) with an accent to make believe they are speaking a foreign language -- such as so many WW2 movies where the Germans all speak English -- and Tom Cruise made one of those just a year or two ago, although I did not see it.
Christoph Waltz absolutely steals the movie, and I very much understand why he received the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival.
I also liked the fact that the movie took place in an alternate universe and that things that did not happen in history were allowed to happen in the movie. If only that had really happened!

My dad always got a major chuckle out of that. I remember his commenting on it while watching that movie about Napoleon with Marlon Brando. Yeah, that's what people speak in France -- English with a funny accent. I have to admit it I laughed at it when I watched Nacho Libre last night, since it was used so obviously to make fun of this movie-making convention.
So, you are recommending Inglourious Basterds? The alternate universe element makes it sound particularly intriguing.
It took me forever to finally watch Pulp Fiction, even though everyone said it was great. I really liked it but have never watched another of his movies.

Yes, I recommend Inglourious Basterds. Definitely a far better movie than Pulp Fiction, which I did not like either (saying once again that the film had some redeeming moments).

My daughters went to see it last night, and MC's verdict was a lot like yours, K. She liked the languages, thought Brad Pitt was good and Waltz was great, but found it very long and overly bloody.

Why the deliberately misspelled title?
Another film that really annoyed me with characters speaking English was "The Pianist" - in that film, the Germans, including the good guy among them, spoke German (and the Pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman character spoke halting German to him) but as I recall, the Poles, Jewish or not, all spoke English. A pity as it would have made for a richer film with the interplay between Polish and Yiddish (the Szpilman family were assimilated Polish-speaking intellectuals, though they were certainly conversant in Yiddish as well, and Szpilman would have spoken it with the other members of the Ghetto underground).
Not going to see it. Far too "action movie" for my tastes, though I do enjoy the alternative universe idea.

Not a big Tarantino fan either despite some of the redeeming qualities mentioned.( I too hated Kill Bill I and thought Pulp Fiction all right) Far too violent for me his work.
