It's a cactus lugg, Hildewintera colademononis or the monkey tail cactus.

Here’s another weird one then. Ceropegia smidtii

I have never met a Ceropegia that I didn't love. Like most succulents, it does not need flowers to make it interesting, although their flowers are always weird & interesting as well.
Mick, is that a bud in your picture -- will that center part open out more?

Too Too Beautiful Mick! Oh I want both - The little green gaping mouth with un-plucked whiskers shooting out in all directions. I wish you could preserve it somehow. And as for the Orbea. Divine red but I'm more attracted to the stem of the plant. Looks almost Cameleon-fide or some sea creature!

Mick, the delicate details on this last cactus are hard to believe. Have you ever seen the flower as it is expanding?

Ooo ~ are C.smidtii and C.sandersonii open at the same time? I love their contrasting similarities.
Mick, are you able to identify simply by looking at Echidnopsis, Orbea, various Stapelia, etc. -- all those that are so similar?

Oh yes, it takes a little while and not fully open until the flower lobes open up. That lets the insects in to pollinate it.

Bixa, smidtii is thought to be a natural hybrid and sandersonii is one of the parents.
By and large I can.

All so lovely - I am learning to love them too. The Ceropegia sandersonii is so interesting plus it reminds me of a giraffe .

Fireworks for the fourth of July!
Mick, I really appreciate your photos of the flowers which include their plants. I'll never get to your level, but by scrutinizing the pictures, I'm determined to learn to tell this family apart. I might even have a handle on Orbea ..... until you throw me a spanner, as you people say.
