Oh! I came over here to post a couple of pictures, so am finally seeing Kimby's exquisite butterfly, Rikita's elegant wasp, Imec's lord of the flies, and that magnificent beetle. I love the way you left so much field around the beetle, Imec. It really gives a sense of his size and his struggles.

Fascinating creatures....and some beautiful images on here... ;D I love bumblebees...we had a lot in the garden this summer. bombus terrestris newly hatched queen on a dahlia a worker... sweet brown one (probably bombus terrestris too) on an echinacea bombus lapidarius on a marigold male bombus lucorum (on a veronica) hover flies on a tithonia flower

Cheery, you know so much about bees! This is an ignorant question, but are males workers, too? Is the bombus lucorum going to take pollen back to the hive?
Can't believe how gorgeous your pictures are. That second one is perfect in detail, color, and composition, but they're all amazing. Are you ever tempted to pet the bees?

I know very little about bumblebees...I'm interested tho... ;D Bixa, I don't think that the males work in the same way, I think that their primary function is to build up their strength for mating. The lads still 'rob' pollen and nectar but don't have the pollen baskets that the girls have... I belong to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, which is based at Stirling University...here's the link. Lots of info on there...and some brilliant photos on the site too.... www.bumblebeeconservation.org.uk/

This is a "woolly bear" caterpillar. The size of the brown band is supposed to predict the severity of the coming winter. This critter disagrees with the meteorologists who are calling for a cold snowy winter...

What a super photo, Kimby!
Thanks for the info about the wooly bears, too. There are some other caterpillars erroneously called wooly bears, so I was confused about them.

What fabulous pictures there are on this thread. This lovely beastie was in my garden this summer: I think it's the caterpillar of the Mullein Moth. There were several of them crawling about on the big clump of Dark Mullein in the garden.

I do have one photo but it's more plant than flying ant! I will get some good shots soon. Maybe even tonight as the sky is dark morose blue and thunder is rumbling in the distance.....another afternoon tropical storm and flying ants by the million!
