Our tablet (Samsung) has broken now for the third time. The first time it was covered by warranty. The second time was when a friend was visiting who is good with computers so he took it home with him and after a few days called us and told us he was able to fix it and sent it back to us by courier. He said it was the connection to the start button and that it would probably break again at least we got another 6 months out of it.
Maybe we will gift ourselves with an IPad for Christmas.
I hope booting it works for you.

Unlike yesterday when it gave no reaction at all, this morning it buzzed when I pushed the button, but it still would not turn on. Then about a minute later it gave the "my battery is dead!" beep. So I have plugged it in again and am keeping my fingers crossed. It's an Acer.

Out of curiosity, what is the age of everyones tablet? How long are they expected to last? I have a two year old Asus.

I think mine is about a year and a half old. A friend has one that is more than 3 years old and he uses it constantly. My use is limited to things like watching television on the toilet.

My ipad is about 3 years old, but it doesn't get a lot of use, only when we're travelling to the Island. I'm annoyed at the storage space, because I like to load it up with movies and tv shows for viewing at night. I learned to compress all the music on it so that freed up a bit more space. Now that we can charge it in the car, it's very handy. It's our "infotainment centre" away from home. I updated the system the other day to 8.1, and then promptly had to update itunes on my laptop, something I try to avoid doing because the interface changes so significantly every time and I hate it. Anyway, all is working and I don't seem to have the pop-ups problem htmb was experiencing.

My Asus 700 is two years old & seems fine. I asked a couple of people around here & the consensus is that tablets had damned well better last more than three years, as they're expensive toys that owe us some payback.
Re: your Acer tablet, Kerouac ~~ for what it's worth, Acer may be the most popular computer brand in internet cafes here, & they take lots of abuse & keep on going. So, it seems the tablets should be just as sturdy. I'm guessing your tablet will come back to life.
I did read that batteries will eventually need replacing, as the tablet might be fine, but the battery pretty worn out.
Lizzy, Android tablets have usb ports to plug in extra memory, flash drives, etc. Nothing like that on the iPad?

I have complete faith in both Asus and Acer, which are #5 and #4 in world computer brands and are both from Taiwan. However, I suppose that I should admit that I am currently using the Toshiba upstairs laptop and will probably go downstairs later to use the Sony laptop.

My iPad is a second generation. It's served me pretty well. Because I sit in front of a computer almost all day at work, I don't want to turn one on and sit in front of it at home. The majority of my posts are from my iPad, including photos and threads. I've got a lot of apps and most are synched to my phone. Some are also synched to my home desktop. I For about a year I've had storage issues since my picture files take up so much room. I load photos from my camera, use a few, then delete all from the iPad. However, I still have access to them via my photo stream. Periodically I upload all photos from my camera onto my desktop.
I also upgraded to the new iPad OS a couple of weeks. Big mistake. I've had memory issues ever since with lots of crashes, usually when I'm in the middle of an AnyPort post. There's really nothing wrong with the iPad. I've just overloaded it with stuff. (Pause while the stupid thing freezes up). My plan is to get a new iPad before next summer since I use mine on trips like some people use a laptop. Then I'll clean off all my memory hogging apps and pass the old iPad on to my son for his children to use.

My Samsung Galaxy phone keeps telling me that it has insufficient memory whenever I want to upload an app. Since I have uploaded practically nothing to it, I find this ridiculous. But then again, I don't really give a fuck, since I leave it at home 90% of the time.
Whenever I am forced to change phones the next time, I suppose I will have to ask more questions about memory capacity. I don't think that my phone is lacking memory at all -- I just think that I have no idea how to use it. Nevertheless, I am thrilled that it has never interested me because I am totally dismayed at how everybody else seems addicted. When I read things like "users send an average of 83 text messages every day" it makes me want to puke. I think I am still at about 15 text messages a month.

You probably have some apps that are open, and then reopen when you turn the phone on each time. If it bothers you, see if you can shutdown anything that might be running in the background.

Kerouac, did the problem start after you used your phone to take photos when you were in Avignon?

Somewhere in your Settings menu, there should be ways of checking which apps are taking up most memory, and of clearing caches. My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

We requested and received a method to allow the Quick Reply/Reply box to only appear on the last page of a thread. Unfortunately, it quickly ceased to work.
At the moment, Proboards Support is in the process of creating something stable that will work. However, in the meantime it appears that the reply box is sometimes not appearing at the bottom of a thread and even sometimes not after a PM.
Kerouac has discovered a work-around that can be used until the problem is completely resolved: if there is no reply box, use Quote, then erase the unneeded quoted portion before posting your reply.

I am wearing out the "quote" button. I've been needing to use it about 70% of the time today.

As little as I've been logged in, I have had the same. It's hit or miss in most threads. Ultra frustrating. My question is: why did it have to change from the previous format? I can't post pictures. do any reports, post links...it's all Greek to me. But, even the basic reply is now flubbed somehow. Flabbergasting and not conducive to posting at all.

Hhhmm. I haven't had the slightest problem at all. Since it's been upgraded, it's taken me a little to learn the new protocols, but everything works. For people who have no functionality: are you using phone or tablets or computers, and what browsers are you using?

Well, for instance, just now I went to reply in small screen viewing...had I not resorted to quoting you or Kerouac, I had no way to reply. And, my reply, had nothing to do with James Bond,sorry...so, I could not post something that had nothing to do with James Bond!!! I'm probably the worst example of a techno idiot but, this for me, is immeasurably difficult and frustrating.

For people who have no functionality: are you using phone or tablets or computers, and what browsers are you using? I guess I am "no functionality". I have a gazillion pictures to post, don't know how...they are all on the card in my camera, and, I gave up taking pictures months back out of sheer frustration. I don't know how to do it, what host to use and most of all when I go to post anything on here am greeted by this url or that to use of which I have no clue. There are people in the world like me I'm sure. Call me "no functionality", that's what I am, not for lack of trying....

I didn't mean YOU have no functionality, casi! I meant whatever electronic device you're using to look at the board. You're fine! Well, first off, you're right, you need to get a host for photos. Everyone uses something different (at the moment I'm on photobucket although I know lots of people hate it. K2 must use dozens of sites, or pay a pretty penny). I'm sure I, or K or bixa or htmb could take you through it step by step if you want. Just let us know.

Oh wow, this thread at least has a Quick Reply box, so I guess I should use it even if I have nothing to say! Actually, I use both Photobucket and Image Shack.

I've been using tinypic.com for photo hosting, it isn't perfect--you have to navigate a captcha-type nag every few photos, but it's free and works and is worth every penny.

I use Photobucket. A bit clunky and functional, but somewhat like me really.............
This thread has the quick reply box. Some I've seen don't.
