Possibly it was the photo of K2 (see the left hand column) compared with the reality. kerouac IS a sweet little kid in a buzz cut and polkadot shirt, isn't he? A lot like my brother Joe at that age.

What I have found, though, is that many people don't grasp the idea of a forum at all. Most of the people around me don't know the difference between a chatroom and a forum.

What is the difference in reality, or is it just perception ?

I thought chat rooms were ephemeral, real time conversations between people who are logged in at that moment. Forums record posts and replies from many who drop in and out, and the conversation is preserved on the forum where it can be continued indefinitely.
Some forums, especially small ones, can become almost like a chat room, when the replies are instantaneous, but the format is still forum, not chat room.
Am I correct?

Seems like a bit of both to me kimby. At times it is real chatty, and yet there are "archives" of useful information . It vacillates,it's a thin line sometimes. How to achieve a balance between the two ? I like both and at times ,don't. We need "mood" boards for people like me.

Yes, at times, especially when there are few individuals online and posting, it can seem like a chat room, but it is still a forum.
A side effect is that it can seem like one is being stalked when the other one who is online at the same time seems to post immediately after each post we make...if you make the mistake of asking if you are being stalked, even tongue in cheek, people get offended....

Kimby - I agree with your definitions of 'chatroom' and 'forum'.

Me too. This place tries not to be a chatroom since there are so many other places to chat, but I think that everybody falls into a chat trap from time to time. However, I cringe whenever I see that just two people have made the last ten posts or so on any thread.

I'd say that's a perfect definition. Me too. This place tries not to be a chatroom since there are so many other places to chat, but I think that everybody falls into a chat trap from time to time. However, I cringe whenever I see that just two people have made the last ten posts or so on any thread. Certainly there are times when two people might "run" a thread and it would be fine if they're actually developing the OP and hoping others will jump into the conversation. However, I know what Kerouac means and agree with him. It's easy enough to go to PM and chat with someone in real time. I've definitely been guilty (not so much here) of gleeful chat mode. However, it's a good way to stop a forum from growing and developing, as anyone visiting and not in on what's going on will feel unneeded and intrusive. Today at ll:52am, casimira wrote:I think everyone does this to a degree. It can keep a worthy thread alive that's not getting enough attention.

Baseball would be a lot more interesting if the baseball countries would organize more international matches. Cuba vs. Japan, anyone?

Casimira - to be honest I know nothing about baseball. I aksed my weekend companion 'what does MLB mean?' .....I finally figured it out! I hadn't looked at the thread.

My hope on a forum is that people are showing their real selves, at least to the same degree as in their 3-D lives. Too often online personae are developed in order to bully or to express somewhat unacceptable opinions in order to provoke. Agree? Disagree?
The OP of this thread stated: "Would we know who each other were based on what we "know" about one another online?"
I don't think the question ever got answered. It might be interesting to have a get together where everyone agreed not to reveal identity, then waited to see if it got guessed individually or collectively -- sort of an adult version of "Sardines".

Funny thing is, in real life these same people wouldn't have the nerve to say what they say when hiding behind a computer screen. Because they know they wouldn't be standing up for very long.

I don't cover myself in oil in real life, only when hidden behind a computer screen. ;D

I was taught it by some little English friends when I was a child. There are variations, but it's a version of hide-and-seek, except in Sardines when you find a person hiding, you hide with the hider, with each new person who finds that hiding place crowding in until everyone is stuffed in like:

Sardines is good fun if you all pack into a closet, more fun if you're not children.

bixa's version of sardines is what my kids played. Even a couple of years ago when we had a big group of mixed age children.
I only play it when concealed behind a computer screen.

My husband always tells me I must be a"a Communist or something" because of the range of commonlace things I don't know of or experienced. (never saw Bonanza, or any of the Star Wars etc.) I think it is because I always had my nose in a book or head in the clouds...

In the last few days I have realised that I am a much calmer person online than I am in real life. I can explode and get really emotional in real life but I have been dealing quite well with online shit.

Sorry but as a newbie on this forum this is really offputting - what an absolute load of bollocks. If you aren't gone, hedonist, instead of clicking 80 recent posts, try looking inside the boards that are of most interest to you for threads that are languishing while folks chat on others. Then start a new topic and see who joins in. My humble suggestion.
