I wasn't entirely sure what Hedonist meant by his/her comment, in all honesty.

Cas, all those sardining kids at our house were 12th Night party guests.
Usually a hedonist wouldn't object to improper online party suggestions, so I guess that's not the problem. If it is, I apologize and don't know what got into me.

In that case I'm afraid my online persona is quite different from the everyday one. Shoot. Now I have to try to live up to it.

Apart from the fact that I have no children and have NEVER had even a girlfriend let alone a wife, and I actually live in Paris and drink wine, not beer, I'm EXACTLY the same sort of sad twat in real life as I am on here.

I was thinking last evening how difficult it is to effectively get across my sense of humor when posting. Many times I end up deleting my posts because of the way I'm afraid it's going to come across. If I don't delete it there have been occasions where I can see upon rereading it how it presents differently and is misinterpreted .

Always a risk. Emoticons, hated by many, DO have their place in indicating a wry comment when a raised eyebrow or wink won't be visible.

I am misinterpreted all the time. I am the sweetest, kindest person on the face of the planet and yet people sometimes get offended by what I say.

Thinking about online personas, though I feel I am myself online, I sometimes hesitate to introduce a friend to this forum because they might not know the same me. Does that make sense?
If I invited them to join, would I start editing my posts?

You could introduce your friend, then create a troll persona for anything you thought might alarm your friend. Think of some good troll names: Bimby? Kimbo? Kinky? Nimble? I'm sure any one of those would fool everyone!

I'm far too lazy to go to the trouble to log in and out with TWO different aliases.
Best not to invite anyone who would be put off by the real me.

With me it's not laziness. I simply don't have enough imagination to make up another persona.

I don't really know you, Kimby, but,I would venture to say, that you would have to make a real concentrated effort on here,to not be detected trying to post as someone else. (Did I word that correctly?) In other words,I think I would know it was you.

What are you saying -- it's a dirty job, but someone has to do it?
Seriously, is it one of those forums where people have to be called to account for certain beliefs or statements?

It's one where only shock statements get people to think. Though even those don't work... Not the Cambodian one I've occasionally linked to.

Back to the OP: By now, I think that we’d recognize most others in a bar, especially since we’ve seen so many photos and have developed a ‘sense’ of each other within the year and a half. My on-line persona is different from the real life me. On line, I am more cautious, restrained and ‘reined in’, more boring and serious, much less humorous. My moods are erratic, veering wildly from excessive to the sparse and intense. Or, tedious.
Given that I only discovered forums 3 years ago, the restraint comes from the last 3 years and my virgin forum experience of some rather brutal attack threads against me. I absolutely did NOT know how to deal with this. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of fighting back with the some of the ‘seasoned and famous forum pros’. I paid a heavy price and was very upset. I was very much their match verbally, but it was all far too disturbing for me to continue. However, this was great entertainment for all of the silent onlookers, judging by the huge number of views. ( Personally, I don’t respect silent onlookers ‘looking at their shoes’ on controversial threads. Too voyeuristic. If you can bring yourself to read several times, then ‘get it up’ and say something. Or, go to Random Thoughts, The Weather etc.)
My sense of humour seems to be too subtle for online dialogue. Probably, I’m just a lousy writer. In life I depend heavily on nuance, tone of voice, spacing of words, the slightest facial expression…all of the beautiful and delicate subtleties of communication between people in life. In a post I usually need to use an emoticom or a paragraph(!) to explain, which seems to make it all useless.
People do seem to recognize my Online voice. On one forum, I changed my user name AND my sex. I became a male. I was outed by two keen eyed posters within the first thread that I replied to.
I feel the most comfortable on the Port, still self conscious, but becoming more relaxed.
....…HW…I am trying to think of you as an ‘obnoxious prick!’ ... hard, very hard...

Save, maybe three or four people on here,I haven't seen many photos of members on here at all!!! OK,four or five,perhaps... I have no clue as to what the majority of posters on here look like, actually,it is all part of the intrigue to me.I prefer it that way personally. I will share photos with persons I have come to know over a long period of time. Another forum I belong to I have posted a picture or two of myself, even then,it's limited to members with x amount of posts that can view them. I totally get what you mean Jazz about how difficult it can be to convey one's own particular brand of humor online. And,because I rarely edit my posts, sometimes to a fault, and post spontaneously, impulsively,it's even more of a hindrance and oft times misinterpreted. I find that people either get over it,or they don't. My first forum experience,I have to say, was unpleasant.Much of the same behaviors you describe, completely overwhelmed me. I felt on the defensive almost all the time. I was very glad when Any Port opened and I could be more myself. I would chose this barroom of people any day of the week although, I'm sorry some of them have left us. Who knows, maybe they will return one day.

I had not realized until I read the above 3 or 4 posts, that a long standing, original member of our forum was still being scrutinized and punished as it were, for previous shortcomings on here. I have been witness to far more destructive and hostile transgressions on here by other members, with no consequences whatsoever imposed upon them. Maybe,we need a Constitution, with a Bill of Rights I am astounded, and most of all, disappointed to say the least. WOW!

With out going into major detail,I am referring to Post #113,in which Jazz makes mention of the sanction, restriction, imposed on her quite a long time ago. She apparently still has only 3 minutes,in which to delete or modify her posts. Since she felt ok mentioning it,I did as well, but,I didn't know this was still in effect,it was quite sometime ago. I am disappointed to know this, and to mock her about it,(Post #115), I think is particularly inappropriate and hostile.

I had assumed the comment regarding having x amount of time to edit a post referred to the fact that most BB software allows one a set amount of time to edit one's posts before it invokes the dreaded "Edited by..." text underneath. I've adminned and modded BBs before using various software versions and I've never seen an option in adminCP for limiting editing by user or user group. Perhaps one has to write or C&P a little hack to implement it. I must say I can't see the point, although I wish they would set the software here so one has perhaps a few minutes leeway to clean up one's posts before the fact that you messed up and had to correct that silly typo becomes permanently wedded to the corrected post. I once reset the limit from one (the default I think) to five minutes on a board I was associated with and everyone seemed quite pleased. As you were
