Great photos everyone. Thankfully, this thread was no too long so I looked at each page.
I love taking photos of statues and public sculptures when travelling. I am off to find some to post.

Some more from Amsterdam Like most cities, looking up offers its own rewards. An not only looking up. Squinting through the trees is required. Many a tourist stopped to see what on earth I was photographing. It wasn't easy with a limited zoom. A fence keeps you away from the tree and the sculpture itself is only 50cm high

To save you from being inundated, I'll post some more at another time. I did want to post this one, though. I recognised Kerouac's photo (post #193 on page 7) of the American Merchant Mariners' Memorial at Battery Park, NY. I researched when the high tide would come so I could take a photo of the man nearly drowning. [/url]

It's the Maman sculpture in Ottawa, K. It sits just outside of the National Gallery of Canada.

That's a great photo, Rikita.
Deyana, is that sculpture permanent? I've seen it in photos before in other cities but only as temporary installations.

In Ubud, Bali is a dense, damp forest called Monkey Forest as it is home to many macaques. There is even a temple for them. These are some of the statues surrounding the temple. with monkeys on top. and this happy looking gremlin-like creature is holding in his right hand just what you think it is!

mez, I'm not sure of the permanence of the sculpture. We bought it for 3.2 million dollars in 2005. Looks like it has sure been around!

If memory serves me, there's a similar spider sculpture in the Washington, DC, National Gallery Sculpture Garden.

Oh yes, I remember the Monkey Forest and its evil denizens! Scary! Your statues would also be perfect in the "moss and lichen" thread of the image bank.

Bixa - please explain why the little figurines in their dance dresses all sport the number 15? That baby Jesus Doctor doll has the most scary eyes! And who is that distinguished gentleman being crapped on?

Tod, those figurines are to commemorate a girl's 15th birthday. Read down from #564 here, a conversation provoked by the girl in the blue dress. Yeah, the fact that crazy-eyes Jesus is dressed as a doctor makes him even scarier! The noble man with the drool of poop is General Antonio de León, a state governor of Oaxaca. In the mid-1840s he & his secretary, Benito Juárez, had the square the general now graces turned into a park. It's the Alameda de León, the big square in front of Oaxaca's cathedral. The statue was installed in 1885.

Kerouac, this "statue" is obviously in front of the Pantheon. Is this a temporary, sidewalk installation? What is the significance of the piece? Why the Pantheon area placement?

I guess that it is temporary, seeing as how it isn't attached to a permanent base. I believe the title is "Mongol."
As for the placement, right on the other side of the street is the city hall of the 5th arrondissement. I imagine that putting something there is to enhance the prestige of the mayor of the 5th. He is completely corrupt -- and was actually the mayor of Paris after Jacques Chirac -- and should be in prison, but he has a strong power base, and the municipal elections are at the end of March.
