If you are the kind of person who sometimes sneaks peeks at tabloid publications, you'll be enthralled by this. I was. Warning, some of it is really gross. Here is a less-sensational article about morbid obesity, written at the beginning of the man's diet in 2007. If you wish to know more, google Manuel Uribe.

Oh my! That's not pretty. What I don't get is, why did the mother feed him so MUCH food as a kid? That's where these kind of weight problems often have their root. Feel sorry for him, It's kind of hard to watch really...

You can see the mother is pretty overweight as well. I think the deal about morbid obesity is that it's not caused only by the food eaten. For instance, if you or I were to just park ourselves in the house and do nothing but eat junky fattening food all day long, we'd definitely get fat. But would we get that fat? Maybe we'd wind up feeling so sick from the bad diet and lack of sunshine and exercise, that from time to time we'd lose our appetites. In other words, the body itself may keep people with normally functioning metabolisms from becoming that cripplingly obese.

The other problem facing people with morbid obesity is it is very hard for them to work it off as a lot of us do to counteract "middle-aged spread". Mr Uribe obviously can't jog or ride a bicycle (even a specially-built sturdy one, like delivery bicycles) - he still can't really walk. He is to be congratulated for losing 400 lb - two good-sized people, three average (adult Western) people and four people in many smaller-build parts of the world!
I have a friend who is far from such an unenviable record, but she has become morbidly obese. Having to stay abed during TWO very difficult pregnancies started off this spiral - and I don't think she eats more than an average person. She is under 5 ft (1m50) and must be at least a size 26 (size 58 in France). She gets out of breath walking and it would be very hard for her to do more aerobic exercise, which would be a must as she is not someone who grossly overeats.
It is very sad and infuriating to witness the stares and smirks she gets if we are having a coffee on a terrasse. This friend's life is basically hell, as both her children are severely autistic and her husband treats her like shit. He is a lawyer, but gives her a tiny allowance despite the burden of caregiving for two disabled children.
