This theater is more Art Deco than Streamline Moderne. It is now home to the International Wildlife Film Festival, now in its 33rd year. (I'd ask the jerk who owns that car to move it, but it's mine!) And this ornamentation on top of a 8 story apartment building is also Art Deco.

This is the Florence Hotel, pictured earlier in the thread (but those were not original photos). The lobby has been returned to its former splendor. (The Red Bird is a wine bar and restaurant off the lobby.) Previous incarnations of the Florence which burned down are shown in photos in the lobby: This thread has made me appreciate the Florence more - I've always felt it was kind of a white elephant...

Just gorgeous! That's the perfect style for that city, too. Is that last building from the deco era, or in-the-style-of? It's quite beautiful and I love the way you composed the picture and caught the "matching" sky.

It is also amazing that those buildings have survived when you think of all of the glitzy modern things that have been built in Miami.

I'm not sure about the building in that last pic Bixa,it does appear to be newer yes. We were on the rooftop right before sundown,at a hotel on Collins Avenue,a block from Ocean Drive. (One of the bartenders gave us full reign to walk around.)There's a pool up there and they close at sundown, so, we were the only ones up there. That particular building being a standout with the colors of the sky going on was gorgeous. They have a very strict preservation code going on there in that particular district. There were some real classic Deco buildings in major disrepair that I inquired after and was told that due to the strictness of the code, sometimes, the owners of these properties have difficulty meeting the particular standards financially, and subsequently, they become neglected. There were not many, but, the ones there were caught my attention. The same thing happens here when an area becomes a Historic Trust Landmark designation. It's real expensive to renovate and do it "right",period architects have to be co missioned, contractors who know what they're doing ,materials etc.

Now that the Art Deco places are protected, there is indeed a trend in building similar styles. Sort of the same thing in Paris where they can actually build a Haussmann building in a style from 130 years ago from scratch and you never know the difference.

Is there a commission that over sees that Kerouac, some kind of policing of or such???I'm curious as to how that works in a city like Paris. Yes, there are any number of commissions that must approve any plans to build something. When something totally breaks all of the rules about not clashing with the surrounding environment, approval has to go all the way up to the Minister of Culture or even the President, such as for the Pompidou Center or the Louvre Pyramid. Then, the architects make their case about what justifies a radical departure from the classics.

Duh ~~ I was so rapt looking at the Miami pictures that I totally missed Kimby's posts on her local Deco. That's fascinating about the Florence. I have to say that the current incarnation is my favorite.

Thanks Gertie, very cool pics. I recently saw some more Streamline Moderne here in NOLA that I have to go back and snap some pics of. Much of it sadly is in major disrepair, neglect. Pity.

I have to say that the current incarnation is my favorite. See # 91 above We had out-of-town guests last weekend and tried out the restaurant/wine bar in the Florence Hotel, called Red Bird. The food was fabulous, between the four of us we had four completely different entrees and they were all wonderful. I hope that they ARE able to resurrect it as a hotel, and move all the offices to a new office building elsewhere.

I miss the old Any Port skin that had the Streamline Moderne buildings. Can those images be copied onto this thread for posterity?

Frinton in Essex is a classic English seaside town. Somewhat eccentric - they won't allow any pubs in the town except one and that must look like tea rooms... Anyway, in the 1930's a builder began to build an Art Deco estate but went bust after only 12 of the planned 200 were built. They have remained and although they were pretty neglected for some years, most of them have now been refurbished. Here are some pictures - This was the Estate office originally converted to a circular house. On the floor is a mosaic of the original estate plan - Some of the better houses - This isn't one of the houses but more modern properties have been built in the same style. This is actually a retirement home - Sunburst motif on railings -

Yes, they certainly do. But then as art deco originated in France perhaps it's not that surprising.

Can those images be copied onto this thread for posterity? ~?~ Anyone can select that skin in the Modify Profile section and look at it all the time! Also, check out Casimira's pic at Reply #23. Mick, I love the pictures of Frinton! Whoever designed them sleekened the art deco ideal even more, to make the houses perfect for a seaside community. What a shame the builders' vision couldn't have been completed.

Thanks, mick. I grew up in Wisconsin, and Mr. Kimby is FROM Milwaukee and his parents still live there during the summer, so I've spent a fair amount of time there. I've never noticed that building before. Of course, I'm not often downtown at night, so that might explain it. Will have to look for it next time.

I am in the midst of going to visit my dear friend in Miami Beach. It's been too long since we have seen one another. I am currently in a much better position financially to do this. It will be just as hot there as it is here, BUT, there's an ocean for me to dive in and swim and try to forget the travails of the last time I was able to go there.
Back on topic. I will scope out more Streamline Moderne representations.
