Oh great! But these ones don't have diseased overstuffed livers....?

Actually, their livers enlarge naturally as a result of the "power eating" they do in prep for the long flight south.

Incredible pictures, Imec! I can see sort of a lavender tint to the sky close to the horizon -- morning or evening?
Never realized that about geese and the liver adaptation. It's a nifty glimpse into how a certain type of husbandry developed.
I always say I don't really miss definite seasons, because I hate winter so much. However, I used to live out in the country on the extreme northeast edge of North Carolina. The passage of the seasons was beautiful, and your photos bring that back to me. Thanks.

Thanks, I took them this morning. It's about 4 miles south of our house (our neighborhood is on the extreme south edge of the city).

Do they actually migrate, Imec? The ones in southern Ontario don't seem to go anywhere any more. People feed them and they just hang around all winter.

They don't find Manitoba's winter all that accommodating - even if people did feed them. We are on a major migratory path here. Here is an estimate of the number of birds observed at a waterfowl preserve just north of the city in 2008:
----------------17-Sep...24-Sep....3-Oct.....8-Oct......16-Oct........22-Oct Ducks.............49 300....57 000....46 300...3 600.....51 275.....30 000 Canada Geese..81 500..102 800..155 000..144 670...87 438....36 250 Snow Geese.....40 600...40 300...121 700..153 800....76 155...24 325
And here's what's been observed so far this year:
16-Sep Ducks 31 000 Canada Geese 21 600 Snow Geese 20
