Park(ing) Day is an event created to focus on the importance and viability of utilizing public space for recreation. I can vouch for the fact that more use of the streets throughout the day and night make for a safer city. One of the reasons I always feel safer walking around at night in Mexico than I ever would in the US is because there are scads of other people -- men, women, and children -- out and about as well. There's an old tram causeway in Paris that looks quite similar to the photo above with plantings. There's also a park in Seattle called Gasworks Park converted from an old- hold on- gasworks. I really like the concept of converting old industrial infrastructure into recreational spaces, it creates interesting visual juxtapositions.

Yes, the "promenade plantée" is an old train line that goes from Place de la Bastille to the edge of the city. It's on top of the brick arches.
