I think the environmentalists maybe should have worked much more closely with the Hopi in this operation, explaining the whole thing and working at finding "green energy jobs" for the hopi before fighting for the closure of the Hopi's source of revenue. I totally understand the Hopi's decision and can only hope they are not being manipulated by agents of the fossil-fuel companies. I can only guess that there are other pressure groups applying pressure on the hopi, be it about casinos (provided Hopi own casinos) or any other business they go about. Are environmentalists the only groups non grata? I do know a few environmentalists who just forget about the world in their haste to save it, so the fiasco described doesn't surprise me that much.
