Mrs Cactus is away so I was able to cook what I fancied instead of allowing for her IBS. We had some spiced breaded chicken fillet in the freezer so I cooked that up with a stir fry of onions, peppers, mushrooms and spinach with cumin, coriander, a little hot paprika, salt, pepper and Worcester sauce.
Very pleased and cooked enough for tomorrow.

In spite of the cooler weather, I had a salad for dinner -- mixed lettuce, stinky cheese, raw mushrooms, sliced tomatoes, hard boiled egg.

Cheery, my favourite Greek supermarket that has good promos has fresh lamb shoulder roast for 8.80lb/3.99lb. That gives me a possible idea of what to make if I buy one. Something Greek or Turkish would be nice too.
Kerouac, those aren't bad ingredients. Probably the corn is supposed to be reminiscent of the Americas...
Me, a vegetable medley and I'll open a tin of mackarel in white wine and aromates (one of those oblong French tins) bought on promo some time ago.Lots of fishy stuff in that cupboard. This week I'll be buying tins of Portuguese squid.

I made pies today... chicken, ham and leek in a savoury white sauce. One for tonight with broccoli and carrots. One for the freezer.

I cooked some cod and mushrooms in butter and then covered them with a sauce of crème fraîche, capers, parsley and dill. Excellent. There is enough left over for a small lunch via the microwave, probably tomorrow.

I made a vat of caponata today, so for supper had capellini with the tomato sauce I'd made earlier for the caponata & of course some caponata on the side. *full*
The caponata came out beautifully, but somehow it wasn't my caponata, if you other cooks know what I mean.

Are the ingredients for caponata easily sourced in Oaxaca? I haven't made caponata in years. Both my thesis advisers were Sicilian, so much of my cooking had a Sicilian cast at the time.

LaGatta, I've had my eye out for eggplant for at least the last couple of weeks, as there was none in my market. So when some nice ones showed up at one of my regular vendors, I pounced. What is almost impossible to find are the good olives, although capers are readily available. I am practically bursting with pride, as I boldly posted a picture of the finished product on the Cefalù a tavola facebook page & got wonderful feedback, including "Questa è la vera capona". *beam*

Huckle, that sounds delicious.
We have pork steaks with roasted veg - potatoes, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions and cauliflower dusted with 5 spice powder.

sometimes finding the prepared is a miracle too. Amen to that! How lovely that you're back in Paris, too.

M&S sells some pretty good stuff in Paris. Maybe not as many vegetarian options as in Blighty, though (not that I mind). They pulled all of their department stores out of France again last year, but M&S Food looks like it is thriving and will survive here. Brexit might make it more difficult and almost certainly more expensive unless sterling drops quite a bit.
I had soup for dinner. Tomorrow I will start a new cycle of real food.

Unfortunately we have no M&S any more. Not as interesting a line, but it is handy to find a small HEMA supermarket and much better, a HEMA, upon arrival at Schiphol airport.
I'd think Chigago winters much colder than Paris ones!
Now I know that I have to take a jar of good Sicilian olives as well as the usual tin of maple syrup if I ever set foot in Oaxaca!

Hema drives me crazy in France since they are just small shops with just a few food items. But I am never assured of finding the things that interest me because each shop clearly is fully independent in the items they carry. I have just about written them off for the moment because 30% of the store is just Easter crap.

That is horrible. I'm only familiar with HEMA in the Netherlands and Belgium.
They don't even carry cycling accessories? A crime.
Easter? We're just entering Lent.

I made a delicious vegan bean salad (inspired by one that I bought at Sainsburys when I was in London in January). Will wonders never cease? I also ate my leftover cod which I had originally slated for lunch.

Well, at least your meal wasn't vegan then. Many bean salads - and a lot of other dishes - have always been vegan; don't worry about it.
I made a court-bouillon with shrimp shells, the cartilege from a skate wing and some other random things. Poached frozen cod fillets in it, boiled it again.
The vegans have been talking about how we have to adopt that diet if we love animals. Problem is, the non-human animal I love the most is a small obligate carnivore. She even brings me mice.

Dipping into my slimming world cookbook tonight...diet cola chicken. Not made it before but it's supposed to be very tasty.
As it's shrove Tuesday I'm making pancakes later. Got a recipe off t'web for 'baking tray pancake' quite a thick batter that you can add different things to..one quarter has banana and peanut butter, one has apple slices and cinnamon, one has chocolate drops and the other (for me!) Just has a bit of finely grated lemon zest.

betteraves = turnips (a normal ingredient of couscous). Panais = parsnips, uncommon in couscous.

Turnip is navet. Betterave is beet actually. Red ones. My wife also include Chervil (cerfeuil).

I just realised that rereading my post.
I hate beets -- one of the only food items that I will eat only under extreme duress.
