Spare ribs with barbecue sauce sounds heavenly.
Now that I have my own personal chef staying with me, and she’s been able to order all the desired foods, we're eating pretty well. Last night she made spaghetti bolognaise, and the night before we had shrimp and quinoa.

I bought a quite decent box of South African white - Chenin Blanc from Robertson Winery. Obviously vin ordinaire, but not at all disgusting. I like to cut that with fizzy water and a twist of lime or lemon.
I'm very stressed and although I actually made a tasty dish of braised cabbage, other veg and chicken sausages, I could only eat half of a small glass Duralex bowl. Livia has no such appetite problems, being not only a cat, but a former stray.

Lagatta, I'll have to try the Robertsons Chenin Blanc next time. The Box wine I've got is Namaqua. Described as an Elegant Rose` Floral and fruity. Not to my palate……. Could be that I have spoilt my tastebuds with heavier more flavourful wines bought by the bottle. My favourite being "Early Mist Rising" by winemakers Verde en Lust. I'll post more details on 'Whats in your glass'.

Yes, while I find the Robertson Chenin blanc fine as a table wine, it is far from the best ZA wine I've tasted, either here or in the Netherlands. Some are utterly splendid. But I'm trying to shop as infrequently as possible. I can't shop only every two weeks; I don't have a large fridge or freezer.
I won't be as worried when I can take my bicycle; there are few people on the buses (which are fare-free for the moment as passengers can't access the front door where we validate our cards) but I'm happier walking or cycling; yes I know that even solo cycling has been banned in certain countries and of course in others there are high crime rates, and at the very least the bike would get stolen.
I'm going out fairly soon, as there will be practically nobody in the bus once the "essential workers" have commuted (hospital workers are already there, but groceries a bit later, about my current time in Mtl. It is still chilly enough here that we can still wear gloves.

As there is no alcohol on sale during our 21 day lockdown That's utterly insane, has any other country done that? Prohibitionists opportunistically coming out of the closet to push their agenda.

I saw a video of a producer of fruit and vegetable plants having to destroy tomato plants. He complained that tobacco and alcohol could be sold but not food plants for gardens.

I made a giant pot of yellow rice with chicken yesterday and it'll be dinner for a few days yet. I use turmeric and smoked paprika to color the rice, and added green onions, jalapenos, garlic, and diced chicken thigh meat pan fried in olive oil then combined with the rice. So simple, but it's really quite good, which it must be if I am going to eat it several days on end.

Set a place for me, Mick! I don't know what I'll be having, but it will involve fresh produce. A friend told me about a produce truck that park several blocks from my house on Monday & Thursday mornings, so I went there today to replenish my empty-of-produce kitchen. Everything was super fresh, although it's a hell of a note to hike that far when I have a market practically next door. Still, as I passed the market I noted it was busy as an anthill and there were no masks nor social distancing in sight, so I was better off taking a walk & buying in the open air.

I made a spaghetti sauce and added some sausage that seems to have a smoky flavor. The sauce is tasting different the longer it is simmering on the stove. I think we are going to like it.

That's utterly insane, has any other country done that? Alcohol sales are controlled provincially in Canada. I know that here in Ontario, the Premier made it a point to make people aware that the LCBO and Beer Stores will remain open, if they were to close it would cause many other concerns for those that have addiction issues.

I often make something like fumobici's chicken and rice dish. I have good chicken thighs and also picked up some (very cheap) chicken necks, for stock. I already have enough poultry stock for a while, so I'll put the necks in my little freezer compartment. Fish and rice is just as tasty, but doesn't stay good for as long in the fridge, so I only make it for a day or two.
Yes, the Premier of Québec made the same ruling. It isn't only the addicted; many people with moderate drinking habits also need a drink for stress relief in such times. There is also the fear of a rampage similar to hockey riots, when there is a great deal of property destruction and possible fighting; domestic violence also increases under such circumstances.

I'd be among the rampaging hordes burning the city to the ground if they made beer illegal to sell. Here in Washington State, they even kept the cannabis shops open as "essential". I got some stuff called Moonshine Haze a week or two back, it's lovely.

A quick stop at the grocery store this morning to find some chicken (seems to becoming difficult to find) and since he found some, he picked up 4 packages but they took two away from him at checkout, 2 package limit, so they must be having a food chain supply issue with chicken.

Continuing off topic, even though people can still buy alcohol in France, conjugal violence statistics have gone up 32% since lockdown.

Sadly, that was predictable, not just in France but just about everywhere, in countries where alcoholic beverages are normal and others (Muslim countries and much of India) where they are strictly illegal. It is a very serious problem. The massive protests agains feminicide and EXTREME violence against women were not the creation only of radical feminists. Women's rights have greatly advanced over a century but it is tragic that this is still such a grave problem.

We had a surprisingly good dinner of Ahi tuna (yellowfin). I seasoned both sides and plopped it in a hot cast-iron frypan with a mixture of melted butter and olive oil. Three minutes on each side, then sliced across the grain to reveal a pink center in each slice. Served with baked macaroni and cheese and Brussels sprouts with butter.
The piece of ahi cost only $4.99 and there’s enough left for a second meal! Cheaper than a Big Mac!

Fumobici, I haven't heard an explanation from the Powers-that-Be why they locked down alcohol sales but I can only surmise that if available it would encourage the hard drinkers to buy only alcohol and no food for the wife and kids. Millions of men ( virtually no women) get utterly sozzled from Friday night pay day to Sunday night when they have drunk it all. We have a permanent painter, a welder and general dogs body, who are weekend drinkers and from time to time have to be sent home on a Monday. Alcohol causes fights to break out and terrible abuse. I can imagine that happening sans alcohol as withdrawal symptoms get worse! It's you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. Then of course we have the ever available 'Shabeen' which is highly illegal and charges three times the price. They must be coining it.

My dinner was excellent -- salmon fillets sautéed in butter with Chinese cabbage slightly cooked. Cigarette sales have risen more than 30% in France due to the impossibility of crossing the various borders to buy them cheaper and also the disappearance of contraband sales (from Bulgaria, Morocco, Turkey) on the sidewalks of the big cities.

You have reminded me that we encountered a vigorous salesman at the bottom of the stairs of the Barbes Rochechouart metro stop plying his trade in cigarettes for all his worth. Only thing was we did not understand what he what shouting out…..of course not as it had to be in French!
Today I left my house for the first time. My husband drove us up to the village of Hilton where there is a fish shop I often frequent. I found out they were opening today for a few hours so placed my order and ordered some medium sized soles, some large hake fillets and lastly some rainbow trout. We did not even have to get out of the vehicle. The owner put the fish in the container on the back of the truck and I passed her the money through a small opening in the window. She was masked to the hilt and all gloved up. We sprayed all with disinfectant before putting in the freezer. I'm tired of meat at the moment so this will be a nice treat in the coming weeks..

Kimby, I had to go to my nice local market yesterday for the same reason. If we're staying home in order to stay healthy, fresh produce seems crucial. Last week I got an order from WalMart delivered with stuff like dog food, cleaning products, kleenex -- all that supermarkety stuff without having to go to the supermarket.

We had a nice piece of halibut last night. Usually too expensive, but for some reason it was on sale: 30% off. (Still twice as pricey as the ahi, so I brought some of that home, too.).
The halibut was as good as I remember. Brushed with olive oil and seasonings and baked in the oven, while ears of corn - the first “fresh” ones of the season (local corn won’t be ready till August) - simmered on the stove. Life is good.

I love halibut. Lots of things I do just for the halibut. I have a good supply of frozen fish fillets. I'm lucky to have a little greengrocer just at kitty-corners to our places. They aren't the cheapest place but make 1$ baskets of slightly rumpled fruit and veg rather than discarding it. None of this is rotten or horrible. This shop exists above all for local chefs (their restaurants are shuttered except for those who do takeaway or delivery).
