Thanks, Tod!
I'm bored with thinking up stuff to eat. Tonight will be leftover rigatoni with fresh tomato sauce from last night and a salad. Or I could call out to a nearby restaurant with tempting meal specials.

Wound up calling La Biznaga. They brought me a clear mushroom soup, salmon quiche with (very woody) asparagus, an avocado & tomato salad, & a a Dos Equis. There was also some not-quite-fresh bread & a couple of tortillas, along with some lime, onion, cilantro, & chopped onion packed separately for garnish. The dogs liked the bread okay, the tortillas are in the fridge, & I polished off the food & half the beer. The soup was nice, but not exceptional, ditto the quiche. Oddly, the very best thing was the crust on the quiche, which as we all know, is the part most likely to fail.

We can buy prepared pastes for Roghan Josh and several other curries here, in some supermarkets as well as specialised South Asian shops that are one neighbourhood west of mine. There are several restaurants featuring Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan etc food. However my favourite South Asian restaurant, Thanjai, is a bit farther away and I have to take the métro there. The food is South Indian and mostly vegetarian, though they do also serve fish, chicken and lamb (no pork or beef). It is quite delicate (though can be very spicy) unlike some of the others which can be a bit heavy and greasy.
I have an interpreter friend in Paris who is a Torontonian of Indian Tamil ancestry, and whose wife is Mexican. Interesting combination, also in terms of food (curries - moles?) tortillas - dosas? They have a daughter whom I remember as a little girl but who is an adolescent now. They live in the 19th, just across the railway lines from K2.

The family of a friend of mine whose husband is Syrian has been involved in restaurants featuring middle eastern cuisine for decades. From running restaurants, they have switched several years ago (before COVID, but good timing) to creating exotic spice mixes that allow home cooks to replicate the flavors of the Middle East. The spice mixes come in tins (like snuff boxes), and are sold online and in local stores. www.silkroadcatering.com/explore-spice-blends?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7pW68NjM6QIVCb7ACh3A4Qv2EAAYASAFEgI4jvD_BwEPerfect shortcut for those who don’t HAVE an extensive spice rack, or who (like me) tend to have spices that were purchased long ago and ignored... I also buy them for gifts. (End of infomercial!)

I was happy to finally find 500g of cumin at the Indian supermarket the other day. French supermarkets sell it in the tiny jars at ten times the price.

Chicken breast wrapped in Parma ham and baked, baby potatoes baked with a splash of olive oil, sea salt, black pepper and a little chopped oregano and a rich cauliflower cheese. It was delicious and all cooked in the oven once I'd scalded the cauliflower and made the cheese sauce.

K2, I also found a good-sized plastic tub of piment d'Alep, a very interesting spice, not hot-hot, more piquant with a bit of heat. One has to be careful with some spices that lose their power quickly, but you have a freezer.
We've had Syrian restaurants here for quite a while, but there is a new wave with the current refugees.

I had yet another Greek salad tonight. I never seem to get tired of it although it must be admitted that I am less attracted in the depths of winter.

Salad days grow less and less as we head for June & July, but I have big plans for a Chefs Salad today with grilled fillet of hake and baby calamari tentacles. I just can't make up my mind whether to have spicy rice on the side or Nicola potatoes…….or both.

I dipped chicken bits in a mixture of beaten eggs and herbes de Provence, rolled them in a mixture of flour, bread crumbs, cayenne, black pepper, turmeric, cumin and salt and deep fried them.
It became a crispy golden delicious totally unhealthy meal which I dipped in barbecue sauce to make it even worse, but sometimes you just have to go with your impulses and make up for it another day.
The frying oil became such a mess that I had to flush it down the toilet once it had cooled. I know you are not supposed to do that, but as long as I was breaking rules, I might as well break all of them.

It's the other half of the cottage pie today with fresh vegetables, but tomorrow I have some chicken thighs waiting to become dinner. I might follow in your footsteps Kerouac with deep frying , and make the Korean dish of Honey Butter Chicken . I followed the video put up by Maangchi on YouTube. She recommends double frying the pieces of chicken. I wish I knew why(besides getting crunchy coating) you have to remove the golden fried pieces for a Meer 5 minutes or so before dumping them back in the same hot oil and frying again for about 10 minutes. can't you just fry for longer? This frying on its own will deliver a very bland chicken until the honey butter sauce is poured and coated on the chicken as she does not spice up the flour.

Double frying instead of longer single frying is an absolutely time and trusted method to get better results. I wish I knew exactly why.

I'll have to check on the temps in ZA right now - of course they are deep into autumn, but that doesn't mean the same thing as here. Except for that frigid World Cup...

A few recent dinners... First dal and roti with hard boiled eggs. Marinated fresh raw mackerel. Stir fry of cod, rice noodles, bean sprouts, carrots, courgette, green onions, capiscum, etc. I should make something French or at least European tomorrow.
