A fish fry is a fish fry. Broiled items should be excluded, as well as those who want them. What next? Vegan options? For us, a twice a year Fish Fry MUST include fried fish. But if I lived in Wisconsin and ate fish EVERY Friday, I’d opt for broiled or baked most of the time, for health reasons.

We have had one hell of a hot day, topping 36C around 2pm. As soon as it clouded over around 4pm I fixed what I learnt from America - a chopped salad or some call it a Chefs Salad. Very basic onion, tomato, and shredded lettuce. One is supposed to add virtually anything. What I did differently was add the remainder of the pecanut brittle I made last week. It must go to the bottom of the salad bowl and start softening the sugary brittle otherwise you could break a molar. Then baked three big Nicola potatoes in the Airfryer, braised the young fennel in a stock cube with garlic and black pepper, and butter. When the potatoes were done I stuck four little chump lamb chops inside the Airfryer to grill. Oh, I marinated them in Ponzu for two hours beforehand.
So dinner was lamb chops and salad with baked potato and braised fennel.

In my adult years, I was able to interest my mother in sushi when my father was not around, but it was practically our own little secret.

Cooler weather and T. busts out the pots and pans to cook. He started a black bean chili which he made so much of as to share with a few of the single people we know in the neighborhood. (we rarely if ever freeze food except for stocks) We will have our share tonight.

I think I'm skipping dinner tonight. The beer should be sufficient.

Traditional Sunday dinner...roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and gravy. We usually have 2 yorkies each but as I'm not eating that sort of thing atm the chaps had 3 each! I just had the beef, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli...with 2 tablespoons of gravy. I licked the plate.

Pork chops on the Foreman Grill. But it will be late as we’ve been invited on a 5pm cocktail hour boat ride.

It turned nice and cool with drizzle so was the perfect time to make a "stick-to-your-ribs" stew. I had bought some chuck steak with very good marbling in the muscle fibres. I added onion chunks, carrots and potatoes plus a lot of garlic and stock. To go with it we have cauliflower and spinach - Chard - from the garden, and for a change I've made Arborio rice.

The idea of two yorkies each was rather disturbing, especially as I doubt those little poochies have enough meat on their bones to justify roasting them.

While I was putting together a Greek salad for dinner my cottage friend from down the road texted me asking if I was up for a visit. Her daughter was going into town so she had her drop her off and would walk home (1/2 hour walk).
So since I was making a salad I asked her if she had had her dinner yet, since not, I invited her to have our dinner meal together. While she was on her way, I boiled water for a couple packets of spicy chicken ramen noodles. I added a container of shrimp and crab 🦀 from the fridge, It was a strange mixture for a meal but ended up being an enjoyable combination of an impromptu dinner!
The reason she wanted to stop by was to drop off a piece of birthday cake she made yesterday for her daughter, so we had dessert as well! Chocolate cake, delicious.

That impromptu meal and socializing sounds lovely.

I made a Chinese-inspired dish of chayote, carrots, bell pepper, & chicken-flavored tvp, all awash in a garlic/chile/ginger/lemongrass seasoned sauce. Had it with steamed basmati. This was the first time in ages that I ate with real gusto.

Much as I like both those things, the rich dumplings would have been happier on rice or noodles.

Tonight in honour of Bolsonaro (or perhaps his victims), I am making an adapted version of feijoada. I was absolutely certain that I had a bag of black beans, but I have been unable to find them. So I am using black eyed peas instead. No problem for the rice or the sausage, but the sausage will be merguez, something far from Brazil.

Well, these were dim sum like dumplings so probably not what you are imagining. But I am forced to call them dumplings because they are not cooked in water but in a frying pan. And no, the potatoes were not necessary, but I wanted some potatoes and both items were meant to be prepared in a frying pan, why not the same one?
And the bags were right next to each other in the freezer, which is what clinched the deal.

Yes, I was imagining that kind of dumplings too. I'd never put other carbs with dumplings that are protein or vegetable encased in dough.

Kerouac - what you describe about the dumplings sounds like Pot-stickers to me. First ever had in San Francisco's China Town.
Tonight I knew 37C was not going to get me cooking a hot meal so this morning defrosted two smoked trout fillets. We have magnificent lettuce begging to be eaten. I ended up making a really "everything in it" salad. That means carrot, beetroot, pears, oranges, radishes, cucumber and yellow pepper.

Picked up some baby winter squashes in the supermarket today. I've knocked up a stuffing using onion, a little bit of chopped bacon and 20g cheese. It was delicious...had it with a small piece of fillet steak.

Tod, 37c in early spring! .... crikey that is hot. 2 years ago I was in SA about this time and I think the hottest it was 26 , but that was late afternoon, the mornings and evenings were much cooler. Anyway .... I am having pasta with puttanesca sauce and a glass of wine ... my last for a while as I am going to do the "stay sober for October" fund raising thing we have here in the UK.

Dinner last night was ready at 4pm and served as a late lunch also. I try to stay out of the kitchen on Sundays and we finish off left over meals. There was not enough of one thing for a decent meal but what I did have was the roasted breast of a chicken. I also had a lot of white rice, so I made a Chicken a la King by adding a bell pepper, onion, mushrooms and lots of chopped parsley. The sauce was a simple béchamel. Then I discovered I had two medium size brinjals(eggplant/aubergines) so cut them in half and wrapped them in streaky bacon then roasted them in the oven.

Tonight I'm roasting two lamb shanks with roasted potatoes. Fresh young cabbage and cauliflower from the garden with the first crop of green beans will be served alongside some white rice.

I had a microwaved fish colombo from Picard, better than expected. Diverse fish cubes in a coconut curry sauce with rice and pink lentils. I think I even bit into a cardamom pod. Most of these "complete" dishes are only bought by me when there is a super special discount, and usually I decree "never again" but this one I will happily buy again -- at a discount. It is nice to be able to dine from time to time on dishes that only require 5 minutes in the microwave.

We don't have anything as nice as that frozen (well, there are Asian dumplings, including a kind stuffed with pork, chicken or soya "meat", and pelmeni, which are similar from eastern Europe, but no decent ready meals, except for a French banner called Cool&Simple, and I'm sure those are pricier, even on promo.

I was looking at a Franco-Québecois expat site full of Picard lamenters, and the consensus was that the closest replacement was M&M, even if it is not as good. www.mmfoodmarket.com/fr/accueil
