I made a bò bún and was quite pleased with myself even though I used Japanese soba noodles instead of Vietnamese vermicelli.

Your meals always look so delicious Kerouac, even tho I don't eat stuff like offal, seafood etc I can appreciate the artistry you put into your cooking. Bravo.
Making Jeff a meat biryani tonight. I'm using a Hairy Bikers recipe and following it carefully after seeing it on their cooking show yesterday (Jeff looked so wistful I had to at least have a go). It's been quite a complicated recipe and not cheap to make..so it better be cold. Making Bombay potatoes as a side dish and chapatis for him...I'm only allowed a tiny bit but it smells amazing...

Last night we had a small BBQ with lamb chops and boerewors sausage. I thought I would be clever and make a "Mealie Bread" using Polenta as the main ingredient. Other added stuff was a tin of sweetcorn, some flour and buttermilk. It came out OK but too dry and crumbly. Needed more corn and fat like maybe olive oil. A real Mealie Bread is only corn cut off the cob, minced and mixed with a little sugar and the corn "milk". Then steamed like a pudding.

Our dinner tonight was a pot of Pho. The vegetables were from the garden and picked only moments before cooking , but the Pho stock and noodles were store bought. Still a delicious hot bowl on a chilly night.

I made myself a little casserole with a few chunks of butternut squash, a carrot, a parsnip, half an onion and half a red pepper with a clove of garlic, oregano, chicken stock and a small chopped fillet of chicken. Cooked it for hours and slurped it up in about 20 seconds.
Jeff had egg and chips.
Prefer mine.

The Kimbys have been salivating all day with aromas emanating from a pork loin slow-cooking in the crock pot. Will serve it with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob, and as always, a mixed green salad. Four hours to wait yet. Don’t know if I’ll make it!

I made a spanakopita. We have so much spinach coming our of our ears , it was bound to be a spinach pie sooner or later. On the side were a few of our newly harvested potatoes and a small beef fillet marinaded in teriyaki. I also put together an instant black peppercorn sauce which I enriched with a little cream.

I am having veal kidneys. For once, I bought an entire kidney, so I had to devein it and remove the large blobs of fat. Pretty disgusting work, but it at looks fine as it simmers in the pot now.

Roast beef. The chaps had roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, cauliflower, peas and carrots. I had the beef, cauliflower, carrots, and baked courgette, parsnip and celeriac. We all had gravy too....lots of washing up...

I had the beef, cauliflower, carrots, and baked courgette, parsnip and celeriac. Cheery, did you avoid the roast potatoes because of the starch? I thought carrots, parsnips and celeriac would be on a par with spuds? I admire you for giving this diet a chance but hope you can return to eating all kinds of veg in the end. As usual your meals looks so delicious Kerouac!

I took a liter of unattractive orangey mystery sludge out of the freezer to defrost and heat up for supper. It turned out to be quite a nice thick soup with barley and baby potatoes and swiss chard. It might have gotten better during its frosty exile.

k2, did you make or buy the samosas? (Either is fine; I have some little frozen ones in the freezer - I baked a few and didn't like them; if I make more I'll fry them).
I'm just starting to get back a bit of appetite and want some poultry livers; ideally duck. Livia seconds that idea.

I buy Chinese samosas at the Chinese supermarket, because the same company makes nems and they quickly saw the marketing opportunity in Paris. If I were a little less lazy I would continue down the street to Little India and buy "real" samosas.
I would have no idea how to make a samosa myself.

I've never tried as they are available everywhere here. We call them SAMOOSAS with the accent on MOO not MO. The frozen pastry comes in little oblong sheets and I think it is the same almost as Chinese dumpling pastry. The filling must be cold when making them. Besides the traditional chilli lamb minced meat, corn and cheese as well as chicken has become popular.

It's spaghetti bolognese for dinner today. Yesterday I roasted some chicken drumsticks which had been in a Greek lemon marinade - shop bought. Served up with new baby potatoes born right here on my patio , and a trio of green beans, carrots & cabbage.

Spinach and octopus…..that sound interesting Lugg! What did she make? well it turned out that the spinach was to accompany the tuna we had for main; the spinach was pureed with some herbs --- the octopus was a starter which she fried with a whole range of spicy delights - it was lovely. That cordon bleu looks so yummy K2 as does most of everything you post, although you would have to starve me before I ate a kidney. It's spaghetti bolognese for dinner today - nothing more comforting than a good spag bol. No idea what I'm having tonight - need to look in the fridge and get some inspiration.

I had another go a making a beef biryani today. I picked up a beef roasting joint joint that was close to expiry today when I went to our little corner shop for my newspaper (no Guardian...had to get an i)...
So instead of sticking to the Hairy Bikers recipe (I felt it lacked depth o flavour eve tho it was nice) I made my own beef and vegetable curry in a rich, thick beefy curry sauce...cooked it for AGES then layered it up in a big casserole dish with saffron infused cooked rice and well cooked, caramelised onions. Baked then served with a garnish of chopped coriander and boiled eggs.
Nearly there. Next time more onions I think...

The biryani was 600 calories for the portion that I had.
Tod, I'm basically avoiding potatoes and am supposed to limit veg like carrots, swede, parsnips, celeriac because of the carbohydrate content. Altho I weigh everything I can't see the point o sticking to a diet that I don't like. If I want a 750 calorie slice of cake then I will have it (altho I don't). The things I've taken from the diet plan are things like lean meat and poultry, lots of green leafy vegetables, salad and occasionally whole grain pasta, rice or home made bread. The recipe book that comes with the diet plan is full of oily fish, shellfish, mushrooms, avocados, aubergines, olives...all stuff I hate...I have TRIED to eat some mushrooms, avocado and aubergine but I REALLY didnt enjoy them...so I'll stick to my way...it seems to be working anyway. 800 - 1000 calories every day...800 calorie days for 3 - 5 days 1000 for the rest...

Cheery- your Biryani sounds lovely and so healthy. I have TRIED to eat some mushrooms, avocado and aubergine years ago I would have felt the same but now those are some of my favourite foods. never managed to convince my daughter re shrooms which she refers to as slugs.

I got the butcher to debone a leg of lamb for me. It was enormous, so a fitting price tag as well - R500,(approx,26 euros) but it was for 5 of us. I couldn't stuff it as I asked him to truss it up with butcher string so instead I got out a kitchen appliance I had bought a year ago…..a large syringe with a needle similar to that which vets use on cattle. I know that because my dad kept a Jersey herd on the farm. I filled it with Maggi Aroma diluted with a little water, and after injecting that I refilled with olive oil and got that all inserted. Roasted for three hours and it was fork tender and juicy. Very good result.

I bought chicken wings again. Not wanting to mess up my oven again, I used one of those baking bags. This one was labeled "lemon & garlic" but I added two heaping spoons of curry powder and a big squirt of barbecue sauce. I was happy with the result although I would love to have crispy wings again. I guess I'll just have to buy them at the store.
