Savoy is the only cabbage I like.

Mick we are so grateful to you for forwarding those cabbage seeds. I am watching them very carefully as things seem to bolt into seed with this very hot weather. We have even taken to planting our lettuce in semi-shade. We still have no electrics....

Hope your electricity is back on, Tod. How are the fridge an freezer faring?

It all came back on at about 6.30pm but I was done with cooking by then. My fridges and freezers are on Solar. If it remained very cloudy for days and days and my solar batteries were running out I would have to crank up the old generator.
My spagbol was lovely - even had some swiss chard on the side. Tonight I will serve up hake fish in a cheese sauce for me and in a curry sauce for Mr. All frozen ready to heat from the supermarket. We have lots of leftovers to finish off this weekend...

We ate with friends and they made a foie gras maison, fantastic, then a selle d'agneau with beans, excellent, followed by cheese (we are in France after all) and choux ala crème maison to die for. Miam miam, and we stay tonight too 🙂🙂

Whatagain - I love hearing your appreciation of your hosts efforts to present a stunning meal. I'm sure you showered her/him with praise which made the preparation and presentation so much sweeter. You can have a Gold Star!

spareribs and fries from the place downstairs, and a. had currywurst and fries ... so, not a healthy dinner (but it was lentil soup and bread yesterday)

THat looks delicious.
On Saturday I cooked chicken and green bean masala. Took me an hour to cook down the onions slowly until they were dark brown but well worth the effort as the flavour was superb.

I love lamb in any form but your chops would have to be "scorched" on the outside for me. I am fascinated with those little squares of potato. They look so perfect cubed like that.

I would love to be able to scorch, but I am not equipped.

I agree with Tod - need a little surface scorching.

Last night I made what started off as Macaroni Cheese but ended up with the cheese coated macaroni pushed into the sides and bottom of a dish, three diced onions and a some garlic gently sautéed in butter, then a garlic sauce beaten with three eggs and cream added, and finally poured into the mäcaroni shell. Baked gently for an hour and served with a simple lettuce and tomato salad on the side. I called it a Macaroni Onion tart.

went swimming today, so afterwards we went out for unhealthy food again (since we did all that sport, that is alright, isn't it?) - a. had currywurst and fries, and i had a cheese steak sandwich.

Dinner was duck confit with individual potato gratins. Mashed butternut and green peas on the side.

It's darn hot today - there are too many lettuces forming beautiful heads, so it will be a gigantic prawn Caesar salad tonight.

Can I order? I would like Tagliatelle with jumbo shrimp in a garlic sauce. Thanks but I will go with whatever you choose.

Looks real nice Kerouac.
I managed to overcook the roti de boeuf yesterday, with fries and salad made by my daughter. She added apples and stuff, real good.

I managed to overcook the roti de boeuf yesterday I know what that means in French (sorry dont know about Belgium) but over cooking beef means the cow no longer says Moo....

I sautéed some Chinese noodles in soy sauce and leftover chicken cubes that I had cooked in Filipino barbecue sauce. It was better than it had any right to be.

Saturday treat - once or twice a year....Kentucky! It might be a brand that could let you down, but today our three pieces of chicken each with fries were moist/juicy and with a little help from 'sweet chilli sauce' made a lovely meal. No longer does Kentucky do only the American version here, but have got their wits about them and morphed into a suedo Kentucky African meal. Easy......replace the fries with papapa or cornmeal cooked to a thick porridge and chuck in some gravy on the side and you have Africa in a box.

I like KFC but the nearest one is farther than I feel like walking (Château Rouge), so I get my fried chicken from just across at the street at Occo Chicken, one of the local halal brands. It tastes just as good to me and is even perhaps a bit spicier, which only makes it better in my book.

I've had Occo chicken in Paris, and much prefer it to KFC, which has wan chicken and too much breading. I de-halal it with some supermarket wine, as do some Maghrebi friends.
Of course the recipe can vary from place to place. I still remember seeing a KFC, rue Poulet. And some cops (poulets) pulled up.

The KFC at rue Poulet is the closest to where I live, and that is where I went one night to get dinner when my parents were visiting since we all liked it. There are two other places on my street. One of them has changed management twice recently, so I don't know how their product is, even though I bought it several times in the past. That particular place seems to be one of our many Bangladeshi places now, which is fine with me. Another place just opened recently and I have not tried it yet.

I adore fried chicken, but it's also something I very rarely eat. It's not exactly something I can whip up at home. I can however buy a dressed whole chicken, simply throw it in the oven and wait an hour-hour and a half and be quite pleased with the result. KFC ticks my boxes, although I suppose there must exist more highbrow and highly regarded purveyors who offer the dish.

I think we all know why most of us don't eat much fried chicken. Health.
