Please don't roast the cat... I had a great-aunt who inadvertently did that. She'd left the door of the old-style kitchen range oven open, and shut it later not noticing that the cat had got in there.

For the first time in our lives we did not have a traditional Christmas dinner.
Due to the virus, the government reduced home gatherings to 10 people. With family members already planned to travel home, we decided it best that we and my niece and her partner would be the 4 that would not attend the family dinner. We did go and visit my in-laws and my parents in the early afternoon so we got our Christmas HUGS which is what was most important to us.
We arrived home in time to get some chicken quarters seasoned and into the oven and I made a salad. Although it was a different day for us, with phone calls to all our siblings, the hugs from our parents and the roasted chicken (instead of the traditional turkey!) we really enjoyed our meal together with the christmas tree lights sparkling.

My family decided that we all preferred chicken to turkey for the holidays decades ago, probably when I was in my early teens.

I find this the strangest thing.....My dear younger sister has a turkey roast dinner every single Xmas. She only eats fish and fowl for meat so I think this must be a treat. This year she tells me she did it the Jamie Oliver way. He demands that you DO NOT STUFF the turkey! Says it dries out the meat. I say, Jamie dear boy, make the stuffing sloppy then! Hey! but who am I to judge as I have not roasted a turkey for over 50 years.!

That definitely sounds ridiculous even if turkey is shit to begin with. I have actually learned to appreciate turkey osso bucco since it is swimming in sauce.
I think that I am headed in the direction of a carbonara tonight.

Last night I made sweet ,n sour chicken thigh pieces with stir-fry veg. Made rice and opened a store pack of fresh noodles.
I'm heading over to the stove to start a savoury beef mince. Might turn into Cottage Pie or stuffed peppers.

My sister traditionally makes turkey at Christmas but years ago, after making one once and eating leftovers for days, then trying a capon which nobody liked, I make lasagna at Christmas. As a family that's what we decided we liked best and I made one again this year and my son in Canada also makes.

That is definitely the correct thing to do. Food traditions are meaningless when you don't like the food proposed. If I am not mistaken, a lot of the British are not fans of Brussels sprouts but have to choke them down every Christmas. (Save them for me!)
Anyway, tonight I suddenly lost interest in what I was going to prepare for dinner so I just opened a tin of lentils and sausage and heated it up. It turned out to be the appropriate meal.

Last night roasted leg of chicken. Two thigh and drumstick portions in one piece. Lots of roasted potatoes from the garden with pumpkin and enormous Brussels sprouts sauteed with bacon.
Tonight will be beef lasagne made with vegetable lasagne sheets. All prepared and ready to use. This is going to be interesting. I wonder if Mr.Tod will detect anything odd.....crumbs I hope not.

I got a WhatsAp from the fishmonger this morning to say they had fresh Rock Cod today. I flew up to Hilton Village to get two nice tail pieces that the owner hid away for me. While I was collecting it the last two pieces were sold. It is a very nice eating fish and I'm looking forward to dinner already! Of interest: The Tiger Rockcod (Often called the Tigerfin Rock Cod) is quite a rare saltwater fish species of the 50 or so types of Rockcods that occur in South Africa's coastal waters. Not a lot is known about the Tiger Fin Rockcod's biology but studies suggest that the Tigerfin Rockcod occurs in deep water reefs up to 65 meters and that they can attain a length of over 1 meter and reach weights of up to 12 kilograms. The Tiger Fin Rockcod is a solitary fish with a rounded tail and is a very slow growing Rock Cod that is vulnerable to over fishing. The Tiger Rockcod is a beautiful creature and apparently is good eating but I highly recommend releasing every one of these fish you catch. tinyurl.com/mvz8w7k7

Just put a tray of lasagna in the oven. We stop once a month to the Italian Club to pick up two trays. Next week we are going to try something different and choose their chicken parmesean. We also have in the past purchased their pasta sauce with and without meat and their meatballs.
I am going to make a ceasar salad to go with it tonight.

Not a thing detected. Probably because they stayed in shape even though I thought they might disintegrate. They are soft and pliable to the touch and a bit "slimy" to the feel when rinsing but on the pack it says this is normal. I did not study the packet too long but caught sight of "made with cauliflower and....etc etc. All vegetables. Will I use them again? I have to- I bought two packs. Now other in freezer .

I always refer to this meal as dinner but it is served halfway between lunch and dinner only because we have got down to eating two meals a day. Breakfast at 10am abouts and then dinner at 5pm about,.
Today, the vegetables were stirfry cabbage from the garden in lemon juice and soy sauce, carrots from the garden with frozen peas, potato and cream gratin, and confit duck with a Jaeger gravy. Aah! I forgot the rice!

Eating at 5 pm is very healthy.
For us tonight it will be pizzas, i just got the leaflet. Pizzeria opens at 6 pm so no chance to eat at 5...
I have a good bottle of cote de Provence.

Last night it was lamb curry and rice. A bowl of chunky sambals on the side as well as a peach chutney and some panini breads. I made the curry. Tonight, after a hot 31C day, I will grill some Rainbow trout. They have been fileted, so no bones to worry about. Just have to go and find my bottle of capers for the butter sauce. I thought the price may interest trout lovers. For locals I think it is a fair price. In a restaurant you would be looking at more than double for sure.

Fish n chips tonight. The chips or fries are going to be potato wedges as it is easier in my Airfryer. Potatoes from the garden so they will taste like real fries not cardboard frozen ones. The fish will be Hake for Mr. and fresh Snoek fillet for me. Snoek that has been smoked is readily available in any supermarket as it is popular BBQ food. I've never eaten fresh snoek so this will be interesting. g.co/kgs/WC8WP5

Last night was rotini in a cream sauce of poblano chiles and bacon amped up with a little goat cheese*. Quite delicious, but insanely rich & very filling.
*meaning small amount of cheese, not cheese from a little goat

Tonight I had horse steak, which I had not eaten for a long time. In case you are wondering, it tastes like *not quite* beef and is definitely leaner, which is not a plus in my book. Horsemeat is no longer in fashion in France and Belgium, which are the principal western European markets, but some people still eat it.
However, probably due to the vegan lobby, nobody wants to admit to supplying it, so local horses probably go straight to the dog food factory. The steak that I bought was labeled as coming from Uruguay.

Last night I had a pantry staple: pasta with sardines. Boil pasta, drain, dump drained canned sardines into pasta & mix. Actually, I always gussy it up more than that, at the very least adding olive oil & chopped parsley or other appropriate herb, & ground black pepper. Even so, the plain version is still flavorful & officially food. Last night's version was capellini + sardines + a leftover hot sauce I'd made from yogurt & salsa macha.
