Its Grand Prix Sunday so we stay home so Mr.Tod can see his favourites in action. And of course Monte Carlo for me is a really boring track so I prepared a really nice lunch. I did a variety of vegetables and we got a BBq'd chicken straight off the rotisserie for R85 (about 4euros). Our dinner is also a late lunch so there will be a small snack around 8pm.
Kerouac - that looks awesome!

Mushroom risotto rice with added mushrooms, broccoli, sundried tomato pieces, a few red beans that were leftover, spring onions and garlic...of course.

Hot weather food on one side of the world & cold weather food on the other. Good as Tod's dinner sounds, I crave that tongue & salad.
I probably won't bother with supper. It's cool here now, but I got quite hot working outside earlier today. As dusk fell, I ambled down the street to the fried stuff stand. They offer churros and french fries, but my choice is always a little paper bag of fresh, hot potato chips (crisps, to you people who talk funny).

Last night I made a pâté lorrain. Inspired by this masterpiece I made a pork and beef mince pie - with supporting carrots and onions inside as well. It was really nice so Im off to buy more puff pastry sheets!

It looks like a great success. I am reminded that I have a package of puff pastry in my refrigerator.

Very pretty, Tod!
The other night, when I said I probably wouldn't eat supper, I wound up changing my mind due to being hungry.
I wanted interesting food, but didn't want to go to a bunch of trouble. Luckily I had a really nice yellow bell pepper and a pot of chili I'd made the day before. I roasted the bell pepper on the gas flame, then wrapped it up to sweat so I could rub the skin off easily. Once that was done, I cut it in half the long way & removed the seeds & stem. I mixed the chili with some really delicious crumbled artesanal goat cheese. It's like a dryish cream cheese & comes in a log that's been rolled in ground chile. Stuffed that mixture into the halves, sprinkled on some panko, & drizzled on a little olive oil before sticking it in the little electric oven. Quite nice.

I ended up using my puff pastry by filling it with chopped ham, onions, kidney beans and feta. Not bad.

Since it was Saturday, I walked over to the meat store & got carnitas to bring home. Got the assortment, including tongue. Had some of that tonight with grilled zucchini, lettuce salad, & avocado.

I always worry that the puff pastry will not cook properly on the bottom especially loaded with meat etc., so to overcome this I put extra butter at the bottom of the dish and baked it on the lowest rack. This is also chancy as puff pastry wants high heat and burns easily. I guess with my thermo-fan on full at the same time, and lowering the heat halfway through did the trick. Also leaving it in the oven after switching off seems good.

I wonder if anyone bothers to make their own puff pastry now ? My Mum and Grandma always did ...I used too but now I certainly do not. Although very occasionally I will make a rough puff pastry, which is still tedious.
Tonight for me it is lemon and rosemary potatoes, hake and spinach mornay.

I wonder if anyone bothers to make their own puff pastry now ? Sometimes progress is not a bad thing. Most of us don't bake our own bread, mill our own wheat, slaughter our own animals, etc.

What is that, please? Most of us don't bake our own bread, mill our own wheat, slaughter our own animals, etc. I'm going to slaughter my own animal if the lowlife little fat sneak keeps getting on the rug.

Whatagain's wine is Croze Hermitage, a wine from the Rhone Valley. I think he types with his thumbs.

Harley thanks you, Lugg. He's still under suspicion but lives .... for now.
You all stop piling on Whatagain for his typing. He does far better than I would in the unlikely event I'd participate in this forum or anywhere else on the blanketyblank phone. And hey -- he posts!
Thanks for the ID, Bjd. I might have figured it out if I'd ever heard of Croze Hermitage, but my wine knowledge is extremely limited.

Lovely pork sausages grilled in the airfryer. Sweet and baby potatoes, baby rainbow carrots (bought on the discounted shelf) and fresh broccoli from the garden.

Tonight was bad leftovers. At least they're out of the way now.
It's terrible to grow up poor where you learn to put extra edible food in the freezer even if you never want to see it again.

I agree Kerouac! But this is where I get lucky....we have a dog. Her second name is Rubbish Bin (was Patchy). She eats anything from fruit like apple, banana and any kind of vegetable , raw or cooked. I do give her those dog chunks but lace the meal with veg or leftover dinner.

Needing to use a lot of the same ingredients from green papaya salad (on the menu thread), I made a Thai raw beef salad.
