I'm bumping this thread so that it will be close to the 'gentrification' thread about neighborhoods.
Surely reasonably priced groceries, hardware, etc. fairly close to home are things that could keep a neighborhood viable.

I'm afraid that reasonably priced junk food keeps people in the neighborhood.
There is now a Domino's Pizza close to where I live, and I saw that they are advertising 'Crazy Tuesdays' -- ALL pizzas, ALL sizes, ALL for the same price. I feel that this is an admission that they are selling a product of almost no real value, because I truly doubt that they are losing any money on Tuesdays.
What could be more cynical?

Much as I love pizza (unlike some here), Domino's is beyond horrible.
Don't you have some of those pseudo-Italian pizza places in your neighbourhood, run by Maghrebis or Turks? After all, they are Mediterraneans with the same flatbread tradition as Neapolitans - just a slightly different version.
A farm family I really like at Jean-Talon market are winding up tomorrow and sold me - or gave me - a HUGE bag of parsley root for $3. The son was sick of selling it. This is a kind of parsley that has huge roots and small leaves, sort of like celeriac/celery root/céleri-rave.
