I'm really enjoying these great photos, everyone. People are my favorite subject matter and I love seeing portraits of them just going about their daily lives.
I'm still shy about taking photos of strangers. I need to get over it, because I miss so many great opportunities. Just today I saw a man on my street bicycling with a cart covered with taxidermied chickens (no idea why). I wanted to take a picture, but I hesitated and the moment passed. :/

kerouac's #182 is splendid, and would make an evocative "random portrait" entry as well.
(I also like the second blurry portrait in bixa's last entry)

Santa brought Mr. Kimby a honkin big snowblower for our really long driveway! It's a lot of WORK keeping it clear enough to drive into the lake cottage. We had to blow out the driveway 3 times in 24 hours. Next time we came up, we tried driving in without blowing out the drive, and spent the next 2 hours hand-shoveling to get the truck unstuck!

Great shots, Bixa! I especially love the one of the worker dwarfed by the enormous smiling statues.
I haven't been on the Image Bank in awhile, I've been missing out on a lot of good stuff!

Thanks so much NYCG. I was pleased with that shot. I was just taking a picture of the giantesses when I saw him coming out of the corner of my eye, so waited until he was between them. The fact that he looked in my direction was pure gravy.
Tod, I just love these glimpses of life in your part of the world. Also love those brooms! Is the man selling those baskets, or are they just to hold his stuff?

Bixa, those baskets are for sale as are the feather dusters. There are three broom sellers using my carpark to display and sell their wares. The brooms are R35 each and the price of the baskets between R75 - R85.
At Xmas time from late November to New Year they have to share the 'wall' in my carpark with a man from Zimbabwe who comes to South Africa to sell his beadwork. He makes little beaded Xmas trees, angels, and keyrings. I think the money he makes is enough to last the whole year in Zim. Now he is of a completely different tribe to the Zulu broom seller. He's a very friendly man and never leaves for home in January without presenting me with a little gift. Will look out for him and see if I can capture his art on camera later on in the year.

Nice photo, but they look like they are THINKING about maybe going to work, not actually working. ;-)

Roadworks in progress give this man a living. Wandering up and down the stationary motorists he sells his crisps and sweets.

It's less annoying than the spontaneous windshield washers or the amputated stump beggars (yes, we have them even in Paris).

These guys are building a mountain of dirt to block the adjoining property owners sight of this big new house that was built in his view of the mountains. What a neighborly thing to do!

These cars actually stop about every 100 meters to take their pictures. Very annoying when they cannot pull off the street.
