I agree there is car dependency in the U. S. However, I would look at it a little differently. We are a hugeh country compared to Europe. There are areas that in my opinion demand that you travel by car. For instance, in Arizona, there are some of the most beautiful areas, which are only explored by car, no trains, no large airports. We have in Northern Arizona, hugh Native American Reservations where the only mode of transportation is the car. I would direct you all to the Arizona Highways site. www.arizonahighways.com/ . The car for the Western states is so essential to really see the landscape.

Not such a huge country compared to Europe if you include European Russia, and why the US? Believe I spoke of North America, which also includes Canada and Mexico.
Basically, that means I can't go to those places, but such is life.

So, if you had only five choices of countries in Europe that you could visit, which ones would they be and why? What attracts you personally about each place? Of the ones I've been to, I liked Portugal, Spain, Italy and France best, probably in that order. (I loved Turkey, but it's mostly in Asia so I didn't include it.) Of the ones I haven't been to, I'm looking forward to going to Greece. I can't get fired up about the Scandinavian countries, even though I'm 1/4 Swedish, and the misty, rainy British Isles don't do it for me either.

hmm....seems most everyone has France and Spain on their lists. I have friends in Spain that I want to visit, you that country is must. And so is Italy, a place I've wanted to see since I was a kid, and it's at the top of my son's list too.
t63, I know what you mean. When I did that last USA trip, we took some roads off the beaten track, including part of old route66, for me, it was fascinating. I saw things that would have been impossible on a train.

I have to try and get more interest in Scandinavia!
All I can say is that I would have posted the same as you Scandi deniers until I visited Stockholm for a wedding earlier this year. I was amazed at the beautiful city, the (annoyingly) beautiful and helpful people and the delicious food. I was annoyed at myself for not having been before. I can't wait to go back. Its not just cold and full of trees, honest!

I very much enjoyed the week I spent in Helsinki. Was for business but got to see a bit of the town. Also enjoyed a day trip to Turku. I am a fan of the "functional" Scandinavian architecture even though manyfind it dull.

Greece is the black hole on my European map, so that would be my 6th country. I have only ever been on a plane that stopped there once, without even getting off. (It was Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Karachi.)
