The sparse traffic driving on the snow-covered streets is very muffled.

AC/DC from my daughter's room. She got a disc palyer system and bought some old discs (we call them 'vinyls'. Back in black. Ok, I confess, I paid that one. Part of her education.

Somewhere nearby is a little girl who has that typical loud but lovely, clear young voice, which carries. She sounds as if she rules the roost, issuing instructions left right and centre, as they do. Although I cannot make out what she is saying.

The downstairs fan on low, which still sounds like a helicopter. That's why it's the downstairs fan and not a bedroom fan.

occasionally some voices from the street. it is not warm enough to have the balcony door open, and for people sitting outside the pubs or sitting on the square singing and so on, soon friday nights will be a lot louder again ...
edit: just now someone out there has a kind of annoying laugh.

someone is playing the guitar and singing outside, but i am listening to bach in here, and the balcony door is open, so the music was kind of clashing until i turned mine a bit louder.

I just clicked on the youtube site, which opens to that page with all the recommendations. This was one of them -- ten (10) hours of air conditioner sound! It gets weirder ~ there are hundreds of comments on the video and they are overwhelmingly positive and polite with many thanking the maker of the video.

well, yeah, white noise i suppose can help people who need to block out some annoying sounds ... it can also be useful when you have a baby to help them sleep ...

A resident Blue Jay in major distress. So much so that he came onto the balcony where I am sitting and carried on in such a manner and gazed at me as though to say, DO SOMETHING!!! (even ignoring my cat sitting right nest to me).

Oh dear! Is a a male or a female? How frustrating for you and the jay. (probably for the cat, too, but for a different reason)

birds being quite noisy here (none sounds in distress, though). in between car noises, just now the noise of an ambulance, some voices, and the sounds of a. pulling random things from drawers and probably making a mess (and she has decided to wear her rain gear in this heat - probably as part of some make believe costume ...

Oh dear! Is a a male or a female? How frustrating for you and the jay. (probably for the cat, too, but for a different reason) It was a male. I do believe that distress calls are made by the males but I'm not certain. I know where the nest is however, there may be another one nearby as well. It really stresses me when I hear any creature of the animal kingdom call out in distress. Birds and animals in particular, humans not so much except babies.

hm, i think it would stress me quite a bit if i heard a human call out in true distress. depending on the circumstances, it might make me call the police.

I certainly would not ignore a human call in distress. It's just that animals often times are so very vulnerable and helpless and rely on us for help. It's not as though they have mobile phones with which they can call 911 although I hear they are on the way... .
