Oh -- how did you finally realize what was setting the dogs off?

The cows gently mooing in the field next to the house, coconuts occasionally falling into the swimming pool, the cat meowing... a dog barking next door.

Oh -- how did you finally realize what was setting the dogs off? I guess some balloon pilot figured it out in the '60s when the modern propane burner was invented and used in hot air balloons. It was one of the first things I learned when I got into the sport. There are safety seminars held frequently for pilots and crewmembers and the comfort of all animals, (pets and livestock)is always a serious concern when flying over them. Horses, especially can create huge amounts of damage and their owners can become hostile to all balloons if one of them flying too low causes problems. We were always extremely conscientious when enjoying our nylon and wicker toys!

The digging machine at work next door.
It's not that loud, and it is as music to my ears. The defective septic tank system there is being fixed. Trust me, having that next door had really lowered the quality of my existence.

Very quiet here as usual...until the school across the street lets out in the afternoon. The playground is on the other side of the building, so usually not bothered by that, but the parents waiting for their kiddies tend to get horn-happy.

My aide bought me a DVD of "Celtic Woman" and it's a gorgeous show, but the visual is about a second ahead of the music, so I am sitting with my back to it and just listening to the beautiful women singing. My fav is the lovely lady who plays her violin and dances all around the stage.

quiet. the chain saws have finally stopped after 3 days of branch removal. there's still a couple days worth of branch burning to endure, though. and that part I get to do myself.

www.ustream.tv/channel/Hummingbird-Nest-Cam/v3I am listening to Orange County, California, where there is a hummingbird mom-to-be over 3000 people around the world are watching right now. Occasionally a plane flies over, kids play, a truck starts up and any number of other sounds I find oddly comforting. The eggs are cracking slowly and the chicks will soon emerge. I had no idea it took this long!

One of the films I screened for the International Wildlife Film Festival was an amateur film of a hummingbird nest on a clothespin on their porch clothesline. It was compiled from several years worth of hummingbirds nesting in that same spot and followed the entire life history of the bird. A charming story. And well-edited, too. Unlike this one, which seems a bit slow. ;-)

Amazing that he got shots with her on the next, Paris. In my experience, the mother flies away if you even walk under the nest. Go to #9 here for a sample of how it sounded at my house today -- also for a viewing of another kind of flying creature.

Street sweeper, cleaning up the winter road-sanding dust and gravel.
Don't they realize they'll just have to come back after the last-gasp snowstorm we usually have in late May or early June?

No, Spindrift ~~ the loud sounds are the wind. It's somewhat exaggerated by the way it's picked up by the camera, but you're also hearing the porch roof being rattled by the strong winds.

The purple martins( a species of bird in the swallow family) have returned from their winter digs in Brazil and are singing all over the garden up in the sky. Easily two dozen of them! A joyous, joyous sound!!
