What would the opposite be? Sheltering in another place? Moving around and not sheltering? Can you be in place but not shelter? The opposite would be evacuating. It started as a hurricane term. If you didn’t hit the road early enough to get far enough away from the impact area of a hurricane, you were instructed to batten down the hatches and shelter in place.

A friend took me to task for objecting to the term "sheltering in place", which did not stop me from objecting to it. It's annoying & big-brotherish in the same way that "Homeland Security" is.
I agree that the term sheltering in place makes sense in the context of a physical threat such as a storm, when it might make more sense to stay home or to go to a shelter rather than hitting the road. But "sheltering" somehow carries the implication of hunkering or cringing under a table from something that is coming to get you, i.e., it sounds passive and victim-like.
Self-isolation, voluntary quarantining, or similar terms seem more proactive and dignified, indicating that one is responsible enough to know to avoid contact so that disease won't be caught nor passed on.

I don’t agree, bixa. “Shelter” has positive connotations and is one of the basic requirements for sustaining human life. Many of us are quite fond of our shelters and invest time and money making them homey. And it isn’t punishment to be able to spend more daylight hours at home, with family if you have one.
“Self-isolation” sounds....lonely and depressing, like a self-inflicted mental illness. And “quarantine” isn’t the right word unless you’re already sick.
The more I think about it, the more I LIKE Shelter in Place. But to each his own. I hope you’re enjoying your isolated quarantine, Bixa.

Frankly, in the context in which it is currently being used, I find that "shelter" is in the same category as "cringing."

I’m hearing, as I do for an hour everyday, beginning at noon, the regular pounding of a heavy bag that’s been hung in my garage for exercise and skill development.

And people, animals, & produce are routinely quarantined just to make sure that they harbor no illness. Also, I see zero reason to duplicate this conversation over in the Coronavirus thread.

I was TRYING to MOVE it to the Coronavirus thread, and said so, but you and Kerouac refused to cooperate...

I’ll delete my misplaced posts if bixa and Kerouac do. (Your opinions are already quoted over there.)
I can edit my initial reply to onlyMark so it directs people to the Coronavirus thread.

Considering the fact that not everybody visits every thread, a little bit of repetition is not a problem for me. Mind you, I stress "a little bit."

I was trying to keep the Sounds thread “pure”, but wasn’t happening.

the regular pounding of a heavy bag that’s been hung in my garage for exercise and skill development. Htmb, your daughter does a form of martial art, doesn't she? Is she the bag pounder?

Yes. That’s right, Bixa. She competes as an amateur and also teaches. The situation in our garage is similar to the video below (not my daughter), except her bag is narrower and sits a little off the floor so it moves when hit.

Mosquito-fogging aircraft making multiple passes over our neighborhood.
If I hadn’t just seen the email from the city of Sanibel, I might have thought we were at war!

As dawn breaks on Sanibel Island, I’m hearing the crash of surf in the distance while birds compete for attention in the foreground. A screech owl is trilling and whinnying, a cardinal is whistling, a mourning dove lows mournfully across the lagoon, and a member of the nightjar family is calling his name from the porch railing: “Chuck Wiils Widow!” The fish crow just woke up to begin his monotonous “Cuh cuh!” Mrs. Cardinal is chipping as she takes her breakfast in the seed feeder hanging from the eaves. And the surf pounds on between the distractions of the birds.

All teenagers eventually become adults. And many adults wake up too early. I like the “me-time” I get at dawn, as Mr. Kimby who has trouble sleeping at night gets in his last few winks after I slip out of bed for a date with my coffee cup. And the birds.

I have never understood people who don't get up at dawn. Some people don't get up early because they announce themselves to be night owls and proceed to make that true with their habits. Others would absolutely love to get up at dawn but have problems sleeping no matter what time they go to bed. This group often manages to have their only deep sleep in the pre-dawn and dawn hours. They're not lolling in bed because they're lazy or want to avoid life. They're in bed because they're exhausted from a night of trying to get some decent sleep.

But what about those of us who are so excited by Any Port in a Storm that we leap out of bed the moment we open our eyes?

Post by Kimby on May 9, 2020 16:11:56 GMT
Bixa, you have described Mr. Kimby to a T - the trouble sleeping post, not the “should be institutionalized” one!
I think if he went to bed later, he might be tireder, and thus fall to sleep easier. I think I get up early because I am DONE sleeping, i.e. I’ve gotten enough zzzzs.

Thunder-boomers! Big rolling rumbles and cracks. Nothing like a Florida thunderstorm!
The frogs approve. After weeks of drought, they are breaking their silence.
