It might be a case of Tourette's.

That's a thought, but I asked him about it one time & he said he has a problematic relationship with inanimate objects. I can generally tell when he's going to have company because there are cursing outbursts, presumably because he has to clean up before they get there.

I am listening to Canción Mixteca for what has to be at least the fifth time this morning. I say "at least" because my brain is mercifully zoning out much of the Guelaguetza music and noise emanating from the auditorium on the hill above my house. Right now it's a soprano & sounds as though all the audience is singing along. I do love the song, which is pretty much the ultimate in nostalgic longing. This will give you an idea of its endurance & popularity: www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Canción+MixtecaAnd this will give an idea of what's going on a few blocks up from me right now ~

That looks a lot of fun. I listened to the Ry Cooder version of course.

Gentle rainfall. It keeps the temperature down.

I think my refrigerator has quite literally "popped a gasket." I heard a strange grinding sound, and now there’s kind of a soft fluttering sound coming from the freezer side. It’s still cooling, but I’m wondering if it may be on its last legs.

I theorized some little particle had been sucked into the motor and was vibrating, so I turned the unit off, then back on…..the sound stopped. Will see what tomorrow brings.

Rick Astley singing "Never Gonna Give You Up" - but now, not in 1987. Still looks good and still has an attractive voice -

At long last I hear a scattering of rain, perhaps it will neaten my garden

Very loud thunderclaps. My pets are not happy nor am I.

Sunday morning quietude as opposed to the loud celebratory sounds of last night. It was Midsummer Mardi Gras and the lineup of the parade was just a half a block away from our apartment.
After a hiatus of 2 years because of Covid and Hurricane Ida (2020 and 2021) they were finally able to pull it off.
We entertained going but bailed. I did not want to be in such a large crowd and risk contracting some type of virus.
It sounded like people were having a good time.

The little girl who lives across the street is a “shrieker.” That would be bad enough, but her shriek is as shrill and trilling as a police whistle blown over and over again.
The family is otherwise good neighbors, though, so I haven’t asked “What’s WRONG with your daughter?”
It’s very much reminiscent of the sounds of a swimming pool filled with kids. A pool with a high dive.
Fortunately school has resumed, so 8 hours a day we’ll have quiet.

I was in the Reforma weekly market once. It's a crowded market popular with "fresas" (upper middle class Mexicans who give themselves airs for being upper middle class). One man had his darling little daughter on his shoulders. He moved through the crowd as she repeatedly emitted exactly that drawn out shriek you describe while daddy smiled indulgently.
Really, a police whistle, a truck horn, a Tarzan yell -- NOTHING provokes the full-body flinch the way that particular kid shriek does.

The little girl who lives across the street is a “shrieker.” I sometimes think that the vocal cords of little girls should be disconnected untii about age 10.

12:30 a.m. A guy somewhere outside is singing "My Way" -- can't tell if it's in Spanish or English.
This is day three or four of hearing what I presume is the same man singing into the wee hours.

12:14 a.m. VERY loud band and lots of loud happy marchers passing on the street in front of my house. They were preceded by two enormous booms of some kind of firework. Oh joy -- the drummers have stopped in front of my gate. The window panes are buzzing. I'll have to go upstairs to see if poor little Oliver has fainted from terror.

I'm in Chapala, Jalisco, on the banks of beautiful Lake Chapala. This is such a lively & pleasant town, with lots of people out in the streets and also promenading up and down the malecón. Since today is Sunday it seemed everyone was out in force. I'm in my hotel being serenaded by a brass band no more than a block away.

On many nights -- maybe all -- at around this time there is what sounds likes an amplified woman's voice mimicking a ghost. I've never been able to understand what's being said, nor why. It goes on for one or two sentences. A mystery.
