I've been told that near the equator lemons never turn yellow.

You know,I immediately thought of you HT when I posted this. You can easily grow citrus inside in a pot. Don't you have a banana tree inside if I recall? A beautiful banana tree.

We do have a banana tree but we left it out a bit too long, leafs turned brown one night it got below zero. But we just cut it and next year it will look nice again.

I keep buying limes, but I never use them fast enough. I must think that I like them more than I actually like them (or I am too stupid to think of enough different ways to use them).

Yes,I have to get real creative, and hope I'm not in a lazy slump when these guys are all ready to harvest. As I've mentioned before,I give away a good, good number of them to deserving souls...mostly folks who live somewhere where they are not readily available or I know will do something with them... More and more people are growing them here,so,my list here in town has scaled down considerably over the years. This has also put a dent in my bartering of them as well. Then, having new and novel ways of preparing them in some way to preserve whether in an oil, marmalade, lemoncello etc...again,hoping for the energy to do this when they all come in.... it can be overwhelming... I always curse myself come this time of year, for not having juiced more to freeze and use throughout the year...

The Meyer lemons, and a few Lisbons as well are coming in fast and furiously as the sunny sunny days shine down on them and ripen them. The blood oranges are all being devoured by the hideous opossums and I have no idea what can be done to stop the varmints from doing so. My friend in Plaquemines Parish with a citrus orchard sits up at night with a shotgun, and shoots at the things. They are a huge nuisance and somewhat of a plague to the citrus farmers here especially near the river.

Lucky you, Casimira. I can imagine how beautiful your garden smells when your citrus trees are in bloom.
I have a lemon tree, a tiny lime tree and 2 kumquat bushes in pots. But they have to be protected in the winter. I think I don't fertilize them enough because they are not very productive. On the other hand, I don't have opossums either.

It is quite heavenly BJD. The aroma on some days wafts up to the second story balcony bedroom when the breeze is blowing in the right direction. I do know of many successful container grown citrus, many New England gardeners that I know have had great success growing them indoors with the proper light and temperature, not too difficult to control in most instances. As for fertilizing, they do like to be fed, especially right before and during bloom time. One has to be careful to not use too much nitrogen with them however,as it will increase foliage at the expense of fruit,a common error in most gardening. I use a simple fish emulsion liquid added to my manure tea in the early spring and that seems to be adequate.
