I love these articles about re-purposed structures. You can't help but think that the interior of the cylinders is a hint of what our colonies on Mars will be like.
What is that ugly thing in front of one of the gasometers?

By ugly thing I presume you mean the weird modern structure in front of one of the gasometers? It is a blight on the ensemble.
I am very glad they saved the structures - they are remarkable. Wonder how the covered greenhouse courtyards are?

Really a great use of existing buildings -- except for that section stuck in front of the gasometer second from the right. Why do they do that?

That was probably the additional apartment units needed to pay for the rest of the operation.
