Stromae absolutely swept the Victoires de la Musique tonight (French equivalent of the Grammy awards).
But I discovered another artist at the awards, who won the "World Music" award -- Ibrahim Maalouf. He played this title on stage tonight and I was moved to tears.

I am not a fan of The Voice and do not watch the French version of it, even though it is extremely popular. But I must admit that this video of the Italian version is the most delightful thing that I have seen since Susan Boyle on "Britain's Got Talent."

That was excellent and reminds me I need to start tuning my Italian back up again.

In the middle of the night I was unable to sleep and discovered this singer on the radio, whose voice has a quality that I have never heard before. On top of that, I am rarely attracted to female singers because they generally have preoccupations that do not correspond to me (don't worry, that still leaves dozens of women to whom I love to listen -- to keep within my age group, I will mention Carly Simon, Judy Collins, Joan Baez and Buffy Sainte Marie).
I will be running to the store to buy her CD that came out in June. While she goes by the name "Christine and the Queens," she is really just Héloïse Letissier, born in 1988. Her concerts apparently mix song and dance.

I like the song and find her voice not irritating, but her dancing distracts me.

When you listen to the CD, there is no distracting visual! I don't care for the dancing either.

But if I want to understand all the words I first need to read the subtitles, thus also watching the dancing. You are lucky you get to miss the visuals. ;-)

Well, here are the lyrics to the song.
x2 Here's my station ouhhh ouhhhhh
But if you say just one word i'll stay with you ouhhh ouhhhhh
x2 Here's my station ouhhh ouhhhhh But if you say just one word i'll stay with you ouhhh ouhhhhh
pour que l'orage s'annonce pour que l'orage s'annonce pour que l'orage s'annonce pour que l'orage s'annonce
x3 we are so lonely pour que l'orage s'annonce

That's a nice pop song. I was gifted an album by that band called Mass Romantic and, unlike is usually the case when that happens, I quite enjoy it.

I'm off to see Paloma Faith in Seattle next week. She's playing the teeny tiny Crocodile Café.

That particular cut is not my favorite, and, there is also quite a variety of different styles on this newest. If you liked Mass Romantic you should really like this. From what I've been told, their live performances are phenomenal. And, the venue where they are playing here, the old Civic Theater (restored to it's former glory) is the perfect place to see/hear them. Not too big, not too small.

It would probably be rather difficult for most people to figure out that this singer is French.

This is obviously not the greatest song ever, but it has great psychological significance in France. In 1994 was the first big AIDS benefit television programme, called "Sidaction." (SIDA = AIDS in French). One of the most amazing things about it was that it was broadcast simultaneously on all six French broadcast channels at the time, whether government operated or private, meaning that it was the one and only programme that it was possible to watch that night. It was basically a Telethon/variety show format but the one thing that was engraved in everybody's mind from this night was that after someone with AIDS told his tragic story, one of the top actresses in France at the time walked up to him and gave him a torrid kiss on the lips. This was back when people did not want to use the same toilet as someone with HIV, much less drink out of the same glass or shake hands with them.
So, here we are 20 years later, and this year's charity song is called "Kiss and Love" in honour of that 'brave' and unusual moment, and it includes 120 French singing, television and movie stars, many of whom kiss each other. The old woman at the beginning and end of the song is Line Renaud, who is the 'godmother' of the Sidaction charity and a French monument in her own right. She was the star of the Moulin Rouge in the 1950's in in Las Vegas in the 1960's. She sang with Bob Hope and Dean Martin, and Edith Piaf hated her guts. In terms of world culture, she is the singer who first popularized the song "How Much is That Doggy in the Window?" before it was ever adapted into English.

This song is growing on me, by the most recent winner of the French version of The Voice, Kendji Girac, a gypsy living with his parents in a caravan.

Yes, it was a great show, lugg, at a very intimate venue. You wouldn't get to see her in such a small place in the UK. Very energetic. I mostly went because my best friend was coming down for the concert and the tickets were only $15. And I thought my husband would enjoy it.
I like Paloma because she is very energetic and eccentric and glitzy and I am far more sober and circumspect.
