I remember reading at one time something along the lines of 90% of the population of the world being born, living their lives and dying within a 50km radius. Obviously, that is becoming less true every year, and I suspect that the majority of us here are currently not very close to our place of birth (and hopefully even farther from our place of death). Anyway, I found this excellent Google tool for calculating distances. I am currently 7260 km / 4735 mi from my birthplace.

Mine works out to be 6984.231 miles away from my birth place.
We're almost the same distance away.

No record here, but I am still pretty far at 5597 mi / 9008 km. And I am 1977 mi / 3181 km from where I spent much of my growing up years.

I am 994.401 miles / 1600.334 kilometers away from where I was born. Just zip across the Gulf of Mexico, & it's no distance at all!

Born in Halifax, NS. Moved to Calgary, AB 5 months ago. Questioning the rationality behind this move now ...

Born in Kuala Lumpur, living in Phnom Penh, 944km.
It's the closest I've ever really lived to where I was born.
Furthest I've ever been from my birthplace is Portugal, about 11.500km.
And the two very furthest points apart from each other are Portugal and Derby, WA, Australia, 15.000km.

Right now I'm only 1145 km from where I was born, but there was a long detour to get here.

I was led to think of this by an item on tonight's evening news which said that France is one of the most sedentary countries in Europe because 70% of the French live (and die) in their region of birth.
I also remember reading at some time that most people (I don't remember the percentage but it was well over 50%) live and die within 50 km of their birthplace. Of course this is normal in primitive or poor societies (Africa, rural China or India...), but I am wondering more about countries where people have a choice.
How far do you live from your place of birth?

From Johannesburg it's calculated at 2,977Km or 1,850 miles but I have to add on another 500km for the distance from my city, Pietermaritzburg to JHB. So that would be 3,477km from Pietermaritzburg to Kisumu, Kenya.

10846 miles, 17456 kilometers. Wow! I have always joked that it is about as far as you can get from my current location but never actually bothered to look into the measured distance.

Wow ~~ if this were a contest, 6Lucky & PatrickLondon would win for furthest and closest!
Patrick, you didn't get a nosebleed going that far east?
Where do you live, 6Lucky -- on the moon? ;D

Nope. I have lived a couple of hundred miles outside London for six years or so.
It's noticeable though, that on both sides of London, I've stayed very close to the river.

Where do you live, 6Lucky -- on the moon? ;D When I look outside I sometimes feel like I am on the moon. The landscape is quite barren and some of the people who visit here are not from this world. I currently live near LAS (not a hooker or croupier) and was born near TNR (don't know the the lady who lived upstairs from K2's cafe).
