I think we all see strange, or merely atypical, buildings where we live from time to time. There is no lack of them in Paris, but I will like to start this thread with a building near where I live. I find it hard to imagine the rationale behind such constructions. The back side of this one abuts on the train tracks, but why bother with the rest of if?

Strange building, yes, but a wonderful photograph! Do you know if it's in use? The rooms would have good cross-ventilation.

I quite like it. I too, wonder if it's in use. I would like to live in a building like that (only in the city though...)

I hope that is wedge shaped. Otherwise it's just stupid.

It is a normal apartment building full of very thin people.

........ very thin people gazing glumly through their windows, when they're not bitching about "these same four walls".

Now I know I want to live there providing I could have a whole floor, preferably the top.(the French version of a "shotgun" )

Cool!
Monthly weigh-ins for the top building to keep the tenants up to code.

Not so strange but interesting. More so in 3D and especially upon coming out of the subway station.( and probably if more skillfully shot.) NYC,E59th Street

No, that is a great shot of the taaaaaaall building, Casimira. All that glass looks fantastic against that gray sky. That bottom tier, with the stepped-back balconies is teasing me with some memory of a much older, well-known building. Anyone have any idea of which that might be?
The Lloyd's building is surpassingly beautiful! Whooo -- all those curves gleaming in brushed metal -- I am in love!

Very cool ,do you know the architect FB? Rem Koolhaas. I had to look up the first name and I was hoping 'haas' meant house in Dutch as that would've been perfect but alas it means hare. A lot of people hate the building but I adore it.

Koolhaas had a great project for Paris. It was supported by the mayor, but a "committee" chose the least interesting most neutral project instead, and they will therefore execute it in 2011-2012.

Is that the Les Halles property? Wow. That could stand replacing, the current site isn't befitting its place in the city. As an aside, is Beaugrenelle still crumbling sadly away or are there any redevelopment/restoration plans? I find some of the '70s architecture strangely compelling but I may be a minority of one.

Yes, they are going to tear down the buildings at Les Halles again and completely redo the park, but I think the new project is pretty boring. It will probably age quickly as well and have to be torn down 30 years later, just like the current buildings. As for Beaugrenelle, the demolition is still underway. All of this stuff is gone now.

I don't think any architects were involved in the conception of these two buildings (or is it just one building?) It looks like it started out as a lean-to against the walls of the other building and was slowly consolidated and enlarged.

That first building looks so dismal, it looks like it could easily fall down..

Isn't that supposed to be the oldest house in Paris or is that one nearby? Or maybe the church next door is the oldest in Paris or both!

It's the church just to the left that is the oldest church in Paris.
