My first instinct is to choose the lake frontage. You will already be driving to get there, do you really want to then have to jump into the car to get to the lake? Or, if it is only a short walk, I would prefer the immediacy of the water. It is beautiful to listen to the water in bed, especially on stormy nights, and to wander just outside and enjoy the moods of the lake. I think that you should check out the various bylaws re: noise, cottages on the lake property... who owns what and how much property do they own. This will be your oasis and it's worth the time. Many people have large frontages and will Never, Ever subdidvide. Or, as happened to my unfortunate uncle, people started throwing up cottages every 100 feet. Then followed the expressway of horrible motor boats, day and night. A suburb! On the other hand, my brother thought of this and bought a stunning property on Georgian Bay where most of the land was Crown protected...almost no neighbors and there never will be.
How much personal land do you really need? One to two acres minimum would certainly give you privacy. I was brought up in the country on 20 acres of land on a river. Now, I am a total city person and a week or so is enough for me. But, if I ever bought a cottage, like you, I would buy one of the easy to assemble log cabins. Your cottage in #14 is gorgeous!

Thanks for the your point of view ladies. The beach front sounds good, but I think I will probably opt for one I'm looking at which has the 100 acres. We'll see. It has a LOT of road frontage, about half the property area is facing it, which from an investment point of view is a good idea. And my kids like to use their ATV's, which this would also be ideal for. And this one is only half an hour from where I am right now, and 15 mins from the US border. Jazz, cabin #14 is nice isn't it? Will keep you updated on what happens, post some pics of the land at some point in time.
