The wonderful, free, unsecured, wireless connection we enjoyed on our last visit to Florida has dried up, and we are temporarily back to dial up. OMG is it slooooowwww. No pics from Australia for a while now. (That's as good an excuse as any!)
We have ordered DSL service to start Monday, I hope, but at only half the speed of our home connection.
It's got to be 1000 times faster than this AOL dialup connection at 44,000kbps...arggghh!

okay, I admit my first dark thought was, "excuses, excuses"
I take it you all are in Florida, now? The good thing about dial-up: one is less likely to become an internet junkie. But once you've had high speed, there is no turning back -- you're hooked.
Supposedly my speed is 100 Mbps, but I'm sure I'm not getting all that. Still, I'm quite happy with it.

I love high speed, and I am doing it wirelessly through Mr. T63's desktop. I can go anywhere in the house and it works. it also works for my I Phone. Wonderful!!!!!

Don't be seduced by bandwidth though. Imagine the bandwidth that a typical coax cable carries to your television with 100+ channels of AV streaming simultaneously. And it still can be profoundly lacking in intelligent content. Most of what high speed allows is in reality filled with fancy graphics and video that aren't especially profound or rich in ideas, which can generally be expressed and conveyed in simple text- which doesn't require much bandwidth.
I love my broadband too but it's not all upside really.

Home from Florida, where we did cave in and get DSL and a wireless router for the laptop. A deductible expense, since we can justify having it for our renters.
The speed of connection is essential when visiting sites with graphics and/or photos, like this one. Otherwise I get impatient and keep clicking buttons fruitlessly until I lock up the computer and have to reboot.
But even with DSL, family visits and house & yard projects with Mr. Kimby (who doesn't approve of time squandered on the internet - unless it's his own) kept me from visiting the forum much while on Sanibel.
The shelling wasn't as good as in May, and a huge chunk of beach disappeared into the Gulf over the summer. Prevailing winds of winter supposedly will build it back up, and perhaps return the shells, too. I hope!
This week is dedicated to getting out the Christmas cards before Christmas, then I promise to be around more often. I've MISSED you guys!

Welcome back Kimby, just in time to join all of us for Christmas cheer. So, everyone have a nice drink or whatever to toast all of our new found friends. Mr. T63 and I are out of here . I will check, but no posts until the 28th when we return. For all of you that celebrate this season, have a happy holiday.

Revisiting this thread because it's "deja vu all over again"!
There is no cable or DSL at the lake cottage, so we are back to dial-up and it's worse than ever. Connection speeds of 12,000 to 24,000 kbps mean I can't even open up Any Port, all I can do is check emails. If they don't contain pictures. Arrgghhhh!
Qwest has been absorbed by Century Link, so I am hoping the new owners will see fit to run DSL up to the lake, 15 miles from town. Actually, the lines are already there, we just need a switching station or two, worth around $25,000 each. (I'll bet 25 of my neighbors would find it worth $1000 to get it up and running, but apparently it isn't that simple.)
Maybe I'll lobby my neighbor the Governor to put pressure on the utilities to provide this necessary service to a rural area.
Meanwhile, I'll only be visiting AP while at home. :-( Like now.

Sorry, this is not acceptable. You are going to have to tear down the lake cottage and rebuild it in an appropriate location.

So until we get broadband at the lake, I will be posting on AP only when we are at home in the big city. I'm so disappointed. But I hope that this is a temporary condition. Cuz I really miss the time I spend on AP.

Well, Telmex giveth & Telmex taketh away. My connection (supposedly dsl) was pretty bad Sunday night & Monday morning. Then, shortly before noon, it disappeared completely, along with my phone service. Today it was discovered that a big cable had been cut by a grader cleaning an empty lot & phone & internet services were restored late this afternoon. Literally restored, as my service is as slow & crappy as it was before it went out completely.

Isn't Mr. Telmex the richest person in the world or is that some other Mexican?

It is he -- Carlos Slim. It was reported the other day that the poor guy just lost eight billion dollars in the recent stock market downturn. Still, he remains the richest man in the world. That probably won't stop him from trying to recoup his losses from his Telmex client base.

After more than a week of drumming my fingers waiting for pages to load - it took a minute and a half to open a link from email notification of new post in a bookmarked post, plus 45 more seconds to reload it since it didn't open properly, then my connection was broken - I MUST find a way to get broadband. Things take so long that I haven't been able to log in, which means I can't post. ARRRRGGH!
I hear that Verizon might be the way to go, even though we don't have their cell phone service. Apparently they sell a USB modem and a monthly plan, we'll see how expensive it is.

It has to be cheaper than the long-term therapy you'll need if you're deprived of the internet. Also, what about all your little e-pals here and yonder on the internet? Why should we be deprived of our Kimby?

Aw, bixa, you're too kind. Well, the best deal I found today for stand-alone broadband is $50 a month for 5 GB data allowance. And you have to buy the USB plug-in and sign a 2 year contract with Verizon. BUT, if we buy a tablet, like an iPad ($$$) or the smaller more reasonably priced Samsung Galaxy Tab ($200), it functions as a wi-fi router so we can use it alone or with our laptop, or when travelling just take the tablet and harvest free wi-fi wherever it is available. The monthly charge is $30 for 2GB data with 2 year contract. (The data meter stops running when you hook to a wifi network.) And the tablet contains full function GPS and all kinds of other stuff I'll probably never use. Now to convince Mr. Kimby it's a good deal. Currently we're terribly busy with projects that need to be done before the winter sets in. But during the long winter, I think both of us will really appreciate a faster connection. If we don't buy in, however, I predict that my internet addiction will be gradually overcome. There is just no gratification in waiting minutes for a web page to open....

Yay!
Mr. Kimby went to town on errands including checking out the above setup for Samsung Tablet and 2GB data plan with Verizon, and I just got a confirmation email from Verizon! Looks like we will have high speed at the lake after all. AND we can both use it at the same time, one on the tablet and one on the laptop.
Now we just have to cross off enough things on our to-do list that we can justify sitting around playing with a new toy!

You will enjoy just having the ability to get on even if you spare yourselves just a few minutes a day! ha ha! I have decided not to take the laptop on our trip next week. Two weeks without having my laptop! I will have to find somewhere to get on-line a few minutes a day. Have fun Kimby! Cheers, Mich

Wow! It works. Maybe not as swiftly as I'd hoped, but for the first time at the lake, I've been able to log into Any Port, open my bookmark list and open a thread and (we'll see) post in it. Life is good. (Now back to work, beheading thistles.)

It seems to be getting better. The speed is 54Mbps (for those for whom that means anything!)
Now to find time to fritter away on Any Port!
