I saw that the area of my office has nicer ones than my own neighborhood. I must remember to take some new photos.

Thanks, Casimira. "Alumbrado Publico" means public lighting. I saw a fancier version of that one today, but alas, sans camera.
That goldy, watery, rusty picture is great. Guess it wasn't the first time that cover was in standing water.

These are wonderful photos, everyone! I just wish that I had some to contribute but it seems that we do not have an abundance of manhole covers here. I can't even recall seeing one, ever. I guess the combination of little rain and very hard earth makes them less necessary or practical...

Gad, what beauties!
Casimira's water one reminds me of finding something wonderful on the beach.
The Parisian ones are like a walk through art history. The first one is a floor in Pompeii. The 2nd, I don't know, but it's fabulous, and the penultimate one -- Gaz -- is the the roaring 20s.

I went looking for manhole covers in Second Life, and I quickly found this very nice one in "New York, NYC" spewing steam, of course.

What, no Marilyn Monroe on "second life" K. standing over NYC pothole? Must have just missed her over there! Marilyn was using a hot air grate, not a manhole cover. Which brings us to the statement voted the most horrible and unacceptable by my colleagues this week. One of my colleagues, who has a very long train ride every day with people she appreciates less and less, said that one of the stupid bitches on the train said, "I hate the fact that the homeless are staying nice and warm on hot air grates while we are freezing our asses off going to work." Okay, that was an aside -- that new set of manhole covers that you posted is fantastic, Casimira.

Whoooo ~~ I actually gasped seeing that. I wonder what esthetically motivated executive or city councilman managed to get that commissioned? It's really out of this world. Any idea if the figures are representative, or simply an artistic reference to the native art of the northwest?

I'm reasonably certain this art piece (what else could one call it?) has symbolic meaning as does all NW Coast native art. Most are actually a depiction of a narrative myth. It looks to me like this was cast from an actual wood (red cedar I presume) carving, one can see the chisel marks in the fields although they don't show well in the flash lit photo. I was waiting for a walk light Wednesday night, looked down by chance and saw it there. I find the aesthetic of these native art forms fascinating, sophisticated, elegant and generally extremely beautiful.

I am seeing more of these painted covers of late and have real mixed feelings about...hopefully the paint is going to wear off, soon.
