Ha ~~ three different languages, one after another.
The French one & the English one are nice pieces of design, in that they look watery. Nice photos, too!

So many sewer covers have raised little square designs on them. I would imagine that usually there are holes in which to put gripping tools to open them, but these designs make me think there must be some alternative gripping system if the first method does not work. Or is this all just an aesthetic choice?

The patterning on old utility covers was to stop the horses slipping on them, modern ones have a closer pattern for vehicles. The holes are for lifting devices, generally a pair of keys which are turned into slots in the holes with a handle the other end to allow the worker to lift the cover. Some of the larger ones can weigh several hundred pounds and they also get sealed by grease and dirt, so brute force and ignorance is specified. A JCB has to be called into action if necessary

Fascinating Mossie
Not sure either -I think it is a cover for the stopcock to the water supply.

All so "artistic" and quite fab really. Do I have some I can send....No. All our covers have been stolen, chopped up and sold for scrap metal. This has left dangerous holes....or wooden or concrete covers. How come you guys can still find them - ? No scrap dealers? Ah, I get it - too heavy to carry in a shopping bag

On my first trip to Phnom Penh, everybody was happy that street lighting had been restored in most areas, because guidebooks like Lonely Planet mentioned that if you dared to go out after dark, it was essential to have an electric torch with you due to the danger of falling into the gaping manholes.
You'd think that places with this problem would have found a way to make plastic or even wooden plugs for the holes, pending a return to the time when metal can be used again.
Oh, and Bixa, those are excellent photos.
