Woman who hid Anne Frank turns 100 abc.net.auThe only survivor of the Dutch people who hid the family of Jewish girl Anne Frank from the Nazis during World War II is today celebrating her 100th birthday. Miep Gies found and kept Anne Frank's diary of her life. Ms Gies was actually Austrian, not Dutch by birth. She was foremost among the tiny group of helpers who kept the Franks and four other Jews alive for nearly two years before they were betrayed and arrested. Ms Gies herself only avoided detention because the SS officer leading the arrest party let her go because she was like him, from Vienna. After the Nazi raid it was Ms Gies who hastily gathered the scattered pages of the diary she knew Anne Frank had been writing and hid them in a drawer. ----------------------------------------------------------- more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miep_Gies

How touching to think that someone from that event is still alive. Since everybody from WW1 is now dead, it won't be too long before witnesses of WW2 become rare.
