I loved seeing the tunnelbana, since I recently read a book set in Sweden where it was mentioned frequently. It's quite different from the humdrum utilitarian space I was imagining.
What is particularly interesting about them is how so many have been seen as a venue for art or beauty from the beginning. Moscow's was definitely a surprise. I wonder how they keep it so clean-looking.

A Londoner told me that all subsequent subways have learned from London's mistakes. Our newish Metrolink line has some attractive, made an effort, but not world class arty, stations.

Love the thread. Subways are the hallmark of a civilized urban environment I think. Cities lacking them are generally lacking much else besides.
