There's a company here called The Pampered Chef - they distribute through parties and catalogue a la Tupperware. Many of their products are terrific and I have appreciated receiving several over the years - must go and have a look in the kitchen.

Every kitchen gadget that has come along one of our friends has to have; not 1, not 2, sometimes not even three. The topper was 3 madelaines!!

I am giving kitchen gadgets to my oldest children. Currently, neither of them has much in the way of any kitchen supplies. I bought each of them a microplane grater as stocking stuffers. Today, I attempted to buy a pastry knife for college girl since she likes to make biscuits. None to be found anywhere.

Microplane graters are GRATE (sorry) gadgets. Sadly while I've bought them for others, nobody has ever bought one for me. I'm taking one travelling next time along with the thin flexible cutting board and little sharp knife as I love a grated salad, or grated veg in a green salad. Fortunately it has a plastic guard (I'll tape them together) as it would REALLY piss off a security inspector to grate his or her fingertips! I'll look up "The Pampered Chef". And there is always Lee Valley! www.leevalley.com

I used to have an "in" with Pampered Chef as my sister was an executive VP of sales at their home office in Chicago. Most of the PC things she gave me are great, and still in frequent use. Wish I could get more. (It's time to get new pots and pans for the Sanibel kitchen.)

Even though I eat to live, rather than live to eat, I still have to eat. And since Mr. Kimby brings home the bacon, I'm the one who gets to fry it.

I've pretty much given up on every cooking gadget I ever had a fling with and retreated to basic tools. Almost all of these can be substituted with a well wielded knife.

So, if you don't like cooking Kimby, and baking, and these gadgets are in frequent use, ahem,is there something you're not sharing with us Actually, they are less gadgets and more tools and cookware. But they ARE Pampered Chef, and that's what I was commenting on. The true "gadgets" don't get used too often, and the apple corer/peeler/slicer NEVER comes out of its box. But I did use my Universal grinder to make cranberry orange relish for the holidays.

I remember when the first dinky graters/slicers with the changeable rotary disks came out and how incredibly cool and modern they seemed. I think the brand name was Magic Chef.

Here's a kitchen gadget I received as a gift. I actually got one a couple of years ago and the joke has always been "why didn't the cheapskate buy you two". Of course, I call it the "love glove" and take the opportunity to grope any women hanging around the kitchen when I slip it on... now I'll be able to grope 2 at once!

I don't have too many gadgets. There are a few stuck away in a cupboard -- like a vegetable steamer and a thing for making waffles (it was a gift). But looking at Kerouac's site in the previous thread, I realized that I would like one of those pasta machines. Although I would have had a lot more use for it when my kids lived at home. I could buy a couple as gifts for my sons though -- they both like to cook a lot more than I do.

The only kitchen item I ever received as a gift, I broke, not on purpose though. Really?! I wouldn't think a duck press would be that hard to use, and certainly not easy to break.

Pity I recently cleaned out the "gadget drawer" in my kitchen. There was some stuff in there from goodness knows when. Part of my recent purge,I just tossed. It was pitiful what I was hoarding away, downright pitiful... Some I did give away,(I had 4 oyster knives!!!)to name just a few of what I had more than one of. (seventeen million wooden chopsticks!!!)

I'm kinda a collector of kitchen gadgets. Some I have found extremely useful, some were used for a time, some.... I used to use the garlic press pretty regularly back when I was younger, until I learned to just wham one hard with the side of the knife, then chop quickly and scrape up with the knife to toss into the pot. I used the press because I don't like getting garlic on my fingers due to wearing contacts. I do still use my magic garlic peeler a lot, as I love adding fresh garlic to foods. I have also given mandolins as gifts but never received one of my own. I think we should form a club of those such oppressed! We'll have cool t-shirts, of course. I just received a lovely mini food processor for Easter. Had been commenting to dh I should think of looking for another as the last time I made pico de gallo in mine, it gave me trouble on the tomatoes as though I had tried to use a dull knife to chop them. I use my mini food processor so frequently, I really was rather surprised how useful. Drop veggies in, quick pulse, ready chopped for recipes, or great for mixing up a small, one loaf batch of bread. My previous was a red Kitchenaid purchased for a pittance at a discount store and lasted me five years, my current new baby is a shiny silvery Cuisinart. Lets see...other gadgets. I have a Cuisinart fondue pot, works great but used rarely as my favorite use is to melt chocolate to dip fruit in. Just too many calories to use very often, particularly as it has a pretty good-sized pot on it. Mostly just use it for parties. A thing designed to cut onions to make your own fried blooming onion. Not used much of late, my older daughter had a thing for those blooming onions. I think I will just pass that one on to her, along with spare citrus peeler (where did I get six of those?), handful of chopsticks, and box of long wooden kabob pokers. I used to use those quite a bit for grilling smaller things like shrimp, but last Christmas I got both a pair of kabob baskets suitable for one portion each, and a large, family-sized grilling basket. Wonderful things, as no more struggle to get the things off the kabob pokes without sending anything flying off the plate. You just drop your chopped veggies, meats, shrimp, scallops, whatever into the basket and place on the grill, flipping the entire basket to cook the other side. My daughter sold Pampered Chef for a while, they do offer quality products, that is for sure. I got a wok, a basting brush with built in container for the baste, a spritzer for oil so as to use less with less mess when I cook, and a colorful fruit bowl for Christmas. I like their stone bakeware, which is rather like a pizza stone made into say a casserole, but as the factory is nearby and sells seconds at greatly reduced prices, I acquired most of my collection in that fashion.

Even though my move last year forced me to purge a lot of things that I didn't use, I don't think I've reached the the simple state I still wish. Gadget drawer #1: Gadget drawer #2: Gadget/tool corner on the counter:

Looks like a pretty minimal group to me, cristina, but what's that white thing that looks rather like a microwave egg poacher of some sort? I wish I had a pastry cutter like that in my gadget drawer. I'd be ashamed to take a picture of my gadget drawers before I clean them out as at least one of them sort of does double duty as a junk drawer.

(and it actually works pretty well...)Its probably worth noting that I moved last year after 15 years in the same house, so a lot of stuff was tossed then, but there's still a lot that I haven't used in the last year. For example, like you, I stopped using a garlic press long ago, but the press is still in drawer #2. Not sure why I can't part with it.

I have a very similar microwave egg poacher and I use it regularly. I probably bought mine at Wal-Mart in Spring Hill, FL for something like 59 cents. I love throwing poached eggs on top of a salad with gizzards or lardons.
