There were one or two years when some of the Paris metro trains looked like that, as a homage to the New York subway, which looked the same at the time. Both cities managed to stamp out the problem.

I took this in 2008. This is Tornado, the first steam locomotive to be built since the '60's. The idea began in 1990 and itook 18 years to get to completion. It was paid for by public subscription. This was it's inaugural trip steaming into Kings Cross station in London. On Armistice day it went past the end of my garden twice and I missed it each time....

Aww, sorry you missed it, Mick!
Did it take so long to build because that's how long it took to get enough money, or because everything had to be individually tooled?

A combination of both I suspect. It now works main lines most of the time. You can hire it if you have a small fortune.......

Anything I capture is pure luck........
I know where it's been and where it's going. It's a short refuelling train which plods between Broxbourne, the nearest station to me and further up the line somewhere. There are diesel locomotives at either end with a dozen small fuel wagons in between.

One of the things I like about the 1:45 minute drive to the lake-cottage-under-construction is that the road parallels train tracks and we always see one or two freight trains along the way. I like to watch the signals and when I see them change from green to yellow to red, I know that I'll be seeing a train soon. On the way home in the dark, the triple headlight of an oncoming train about puts our eyes out.
No photos, since I'm usually at the wheel....

Oh, that first one looks like a painting! Great pictures, but I totally love the last one, with the plumes from the locomotives at both ends, that one little spot of red, AND a killer noitcelfer right over the dashboard.

Tropical Forest in Atocha Train Station, Madrid, 2002 For 4 months in 2006, we lived in a house near Pátzcuaro with the freight train tracks less than 200 feet from our front door. It took a while to accustom ourselves to the rumble and the blare of the horn, at all hours. We moved to a quieter place in the country, where the sound of the train is now distant and sweetly mournful. I like like this much better.
