French people individualistic? Ha! Cycling along in formation striped top and beret with a baguette in the basket and a Gauloise hanging from lower lip on the way to the cafe? Hrrrmmph.
Now Americans, we are rugged individualists- out on the open range all mavericky and rogue-like. Yessirree ;D

Was going through old files and found this. It's in Guildford, Surrey.

And I like the golden glow near sunset, I suppose. Roof level in Paris is often a lovely place to be.

you're correct, it was taken near sunset...funny I never noticed that glow before. Thanks for pointing it our kerouac.

Gosh ~~ what is #40?!
Those are lovely pictures, GreyGhost. I particularly like the sort of Dr. Caligari effect of the first one, and as mentioned, the mellow light in all of them.
I have a question about the kinds of chimneys shown in so many of these photos from Europe. Are all the various stovepipes channeled together, then out through the roof and contained in the part called "chimney"?

#40 is just one of those simple old chimneys on the Louvre.

I wonder if the iron/steel braces on that Louvre chimney are original or a seismic retrofit? In Italy everything old is shot through with tension links and anchors as part of seismic retrofitting, but does Paris even get earthquakes?

Perhaps that chimney is itself a retrofit. It seems awfully tall and is blocking the crown sculpture behind it, among other things. Is no one going to answer my question?

We are waiting for a chimney engineer to join the site.

From studying old houses being demolished around here, I'd say you're right, bixa. You can see the various flues from fireplaces and furnaces channeling together through the brickwork to unite below the chimney.

I have flues running through two corners of my apartment, but apparently my own apartment was never graced with a fireplace in olden times. My downstairs neighbors have some lovely fireplaces, though.

This particular one is taken from the courtyard at Musee Bourdelle.

My downstairs neighbors have some lovely fireplaces, though. Couldn't you just "tap into" the chimney since it's there? (You might want to put a CO2 detector in your apartment, though.)

Luckily, it is just steam rather than smoke.

I sure hope that's steam, not pollution. Seeing how as it's Earth Day today and all...

It's very pretty steam.
Love those rusty chimneys, too.
